Question for Those Who Know Their Rambows

I have an old Hoppe Pro - circa 1964. Like every other Hoppe I've ever seen, the length
of the points vary by upwards of a full inch - and you can see the seam of the leather
wrap from across the room. Typical of that era - but would likely trigger a nervous
breakdown in today's cue buyers.

So, to those of you who have owned, or even seen, a few, did Herman "even out" the points on his
custom cues. Also, how about them wraps? Are his leather wraps noticeably better than a standard Hoppe.

Thanks in advance and all that.

All the posts you have and you put this in the main section as opposed to the correct section?

The points on my Rambow hoppe are pretty even, noticeably better, tighter, cleaner whatever, than the Willie Hoppe signature cues I've had.
My other Rambows aren't as even as the Hoppe.

Maybe I should have them made into Titlist conversions to even up the points better><::confused:

It's not unusual for a thread like this to be in the main forum.
At least it's not in the wanted / for sale section, and it will get more attention in the main forum.
Judgment call, could go either way, no harm

My Titlist Rambow has perfect points on both the inside and outside.

I can't comment on his wraps, but it would be hard to do a worse wrap job than the old Hoppe's! That thick leather just wasn't conductive to wrapping cues.

Thanks Mr blues... glad to see someone else understands Main Forum will get
10x the views of other sections:)

BTW - nice group of cues - I see your Master Stroke is one of the rare(?) fibre jointed
example. When I was just youngster, an elderly gent who was one of the best players
in my "home room", had one very similar.

Thanks Chris, perhaps sometimes he did and sometimes not.

Spot on about the leather wrap, But I must admit I love the FEEL of the Hoppe wrap

Ive read that the gentleman who did the scrolled signatures on the forearms did them on many non-Rambo cues that left the factory. Certainly many Rambo cues were never touched by him. If not signed, By Rambo, I woukd have my doubts.

Did you see the pair of Rambos that went off on ebay a week or 2 back ? Was a husband and wife set, he was a physician. They sold for about $4500 as I recall.

Crazy what they go for. IMO they arent rare, arent players... Many other cues I would buy first. Everyone has their tastes.

I have a few Rambows and a few Hoppe cues. I have not dug them out to see how the points compare. But I can say from memory that the Leather wraps vary all over the place on quality on the Hoppe cues from near perfect to really so so. The leather job on the Rambows are decent.

Thank you Mr. Hightower.

I suspected he might have done a better job on the custom cues

The signatures were options.
It cost extra to get the players name flourished on the cue from Rambow, some were signed, some weren't, some have his name and some don't.
My Rambow with the players name, (who happened to be a famous actor from way back) also has the initials on the shaft.
Deano Andrews told me it was definitely a Rambow.
The other two probably, but I didn't want to send them out and pay for the LOA.
Many of the Hoppe Rambow's were not signed.

Sorry, I loaned my phone booth to some guy who calls himself Dr. Who and he ended up traveling thru time with it for months. I called and called him but got no answer. Finally I went to his mothers house and waited for him to come home so I could get it back. He never showed up but he did call me back and said that he had a phone booth on eBay that I could buy instead. I paid him $1300 bucks and waited. What arrived was a cardboard box and an old rotary phone, totally not what I saw in the picture on eBay.

What was the question again?:grin-square:

From my experience, rambow cue leather wraps are pretty tight, generally speaking. But I can't say for sure if he altered every one he touched. There could be stock wraps out there with his name on it.

As for the points, its the same situation. I've seen some that were perfect, I've seen some that would really make you wonder. Turning them down is not a guarantee that the points will even up, although I do believe it would be only be natural to choose good blanks or good finished titlests to begin with.

Ive read that the gentleman who did the scrolled signatures on the forearms did them on many non-Rambo cues that left the factory. Certainly many Rambo cues were never touched by him. If not signed, By Rambo, I woukd have my doubts.

Why would a factory cue have a scrolled signature? Not sure I'm understanding this claim.
