Decisions, decisions - urgent input needed

All,

Looks like I finally got a dream choice for my first table for my nice finished basement. I was a fairly competitive player (APA, TopGun winner, etc) but have since retired young since I couldnt really put in the hours w/o my own table. I found two choices and am torn between them: Brunswick Medallist 9' with Simonis already on it and a Brunswick Prestige OS8 ...and they are both $1500. Which one is better? Need to decide asap...I can fit the 9' (per official dimensions) as long as I don't paint the walls...

Thanks,
DS

Put $1500.00 down on a tournament used Diamond Pro/Am, put the rest on a credit card.

Yeah, it's THAT much better than a Gold Crown.

Sorry the paint comment was dry humor. my width is 13'6" on the dot and that is exactly what several "dimension guidelines" gave. So I don't have any "room" to spare.

Definitely. You're just wasting your time and money on any other table than a Diamond.... and shim it

Hold on

13ft 6 inches isn't near enough room. 50x100 inches cushion to cushion, you need 5 ft minimum on each side. That's 14ft 2inches total. Gonna need a short stick. I would get the nine and learn to keep cue off rail 6 inches. That's proper position anyway! Good luck.

13'6" is a sick joke on those who believe it.

I have 14'3" and tap the wall occasionally.

I say skip the 9', unless you are good with a shortie cue for some shots.

I think you need at least 5' added to all sides of the table.

So 14 1/2 x 19' is min. to have enough room, as a cue is approx. 60' or 5'.

!3'6" isn't going to do it for a 41/2' x 9' table.

Tape it off on the floor, then lay a cue from table edge to wall and then see what you think of those guide lines.

Good Luck to you, but don't assume guide lines made up by people trying to sell tables are right, check for yourself.

Good idea Froze.

Then put something, like a chair - where the top of the chair is where the edge of the rail will be. Then stroke off of it and see how impaired your shots may be.

For once, I think we're actually in agreement. Now knowing your room dimensions, an 8 footer would even be tight. There's no shame in a barbox you know... ;)

You will hate playing on a 9ft with that width unless you are ok with using a short cue a lot.

Agreed....13 1/4 feet wide room would be minimum for a 7 footer. Go with the 7 or you will never be happy. Like was said earlier. ...and 8 foot would even be tight. Use masking tape and mark 78 x39 on the floor. Should be close to perfect for your room size. And get a 7 with really tight pockets. Then the pockets at league will look like canyons!

I have to agree with this - the 8' table or 7' will be better, a 9' will be frustrating.

I'd say skip the 8. How often are you gonna play on an 8 foot table in a league or a tourney. Go Diamond 7 foot, or for $1500 you can get buy a valley for cash... yeah, I know folks don't like them cause they are easy... but get new rails and shim it, and away you go.

Agreed. And if you have to have a Brunswick, they make some really nice 7 footers. As said by a few already, a 7with tight pockets is just as beneficial for practice as a 9 foot would be. Unless you are practicing for the US Amateur championship, a 9 foot is really unnecessary IMHO. Also remember a 9 foot is more expensive to recover when it is needed.
