Any decent small tables out there?

Hey everyone,
I'm new to this forum and have a burning question that I feel should only be entrusted to the pool community...

My boyfriend and I have been shooting for several years now, not competitively, just enough to make an obsessive hobby out of it. We bought a house last summer and one of our requirements was we had to get a place with a nice basement where we could put a table. We found the perfect house, but the table spot is a tad small. As much as I would love to get a regulation size table down there, it's just not practical. We're looking to get a 6 or 6.5 foot table for now just to shoot around on at home, in hopes that when we're a little older with better jobs and a bigger house we can actually get the table of our dreams.

Problem: we can't seem to find a decent table of this size. Everything on craigslist is total crap, so we'd rather get a new one. The only thing we can find is bar-style tables, and that's not what we're looking for. We would like a 1" slate table, preferably with pockets rather than a ball return mechanism, that doesn't look like we got it from the dive bar down the street.

Any suggestions??

Cheers! -Stacy

It might be helpful if you give the measurements of the playing area. The only option for a six footer (that comes to mind) is a valley bar box. You might have enough room for a 7 foot and that will open your options.....A LOT.

Maybe buy a cheap bar box and refurbish it to look the way you want it to look.

The space is about 13.5 x 10, so even with a 6 or 6.5 we're going to be butting up against walls if shooting right up against a rail. I'm trying to convince the BF that a 7 footer isn't going to make that much of a difference since it's going to be tight either way...

I don't know what state you are from, but most all of the 6' and 6' 6" went to the Northeast. I believe Valley stopped making them some time ago. If you're use to playing on a 9' I don't believe you will be happy with a 6', and a 7' will be a pain, having to use a short cue all around. JT

I'm in NY. I looked at valley and it looks like you're right. I'm used to playing on anything really. I started in bars so I learned on a small table, but I play on 9s at the pool hall as well so I'm really not picky.

The other option is (a friend suggested this) getting a bigger table and just putting it in a corner. Can't play an actual game on it but still get the satisfaction of shooting on a big table and be able to practice tough shots. Thoughts?

I believe Olhausen has drop pocket tables that you can get in 7 foot , check out their website . Hey , you can even get a 6 footer.

Bumper pool

table

No matter which sized table you settle on, put it in the garage and shovel. In the long run, you'll be much happier!

many years back I did some work at a really nice couples house. he had 3x6 table and I played him a few games on it. to be honest, I would rather have no table at all then that table. it was the weirdest thing to play on. no fun at all. my vote goes to bumper pool table!

14' 6" X 11" 3" is the minimum recommended room size for a 7 footer IF you would consider using a 48" cue.

I think you'd be disappointed with a table the would fit. You don't have the room for a room.

Turn the pool table bank into the Pocketeer Billiards Bank (I'm good at google) or whatever pool room you're closest. Just keep playing!

That's for sure! They are like playing on a postage stamp!

10 foot wide room huh? Wow. Even bumper pool would be tight!

You're going to lose your mind having only half a table to play on. It's even less than half since the walls will stop you from playing a lot of shots on the two available rails. Between this idea and no table at all, you're better off with no table at all.

I put 9' GC in my basement even though I have two load-bearing poles and a staircase in the way. I'm to the point where I'm willing to destroy the staircase (use a ladder to get into the basement) and risk the house collapsing to get those g-d poles out of the way.

I just about shot Dr. Pepper through my nose... I have thought the same thing.

I had a 'thinking' session out loud, within earshot of my (soon to be ex)wife...

Me: "Spiral staircase, i-beam stretcher... "
Her: "I'd need to see it first"
Me: "Like I can find someone else with a spiral staircase and a pool table."
Her: "Well then, I guess it's a no"

I'm not going to miss her.

similar situation here! the room isn't really 13x10 thats just the open space to put a table...its actually 13x20 with a pole in the middle...so i wouldn't be against a wall on all sides, it would just get really annoying (as you've experienced) when we have to shoot around the pole.

Then on the side perpendicular to that is the staircase, so there's extra cue room there too. So really 13x10 is the floor space that I have available for the table itself, but there's extra air space for shooting...
