What would get you to go to a tournament?

What's the minimum required for you to attend a tournament?

I'm trying to nail down my plans for a few monthly tournaments. They will be played on 4 Diamond barboxes.

1. Single-game tournament with winner and loser sides

2. APA tournament, using handicaps - may be limited to teams that play out of bar

3. Short-rack bank pool

What I now need to do is figure out just how much I should be putting back into the tournaments. How much entry and added monies would get you to go to a tournament?

Edit: FYI, the typical buy-in around Portland is $5. I'd like to see that increase, though.

There is so little action in my area, I don't care what the payout is. Just want to play.
If the band won't play, I'd be happy with a gazzoo and a whistle!

I picked other because I just want strong players at the tournament. I'm not in it for the money just to get better. I understand I'm in the minority though. Most of the people around here won't touch a tourney unless there's added dollars.

There are some cheap tournaments here and there, but I hate the thought of staying out until 1am to make $20 or so after the tab is settled. One reason I just want a few monthlies and have one of them a 1 game-per-side tournament. I rarely find "action", but only because I'm really lazy and most of my friends don't gamble much, if at all.

tits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear ya. Portland is the strip-club capital.

I'd enter a tournament for the blind.

Heck, I'd probably still lose.

If it were at one of two locations here, I'd lose against myself if it was possible.

That's my plan for the banks tournament. Up the entry and get better shooters making more better shots. The others are more for regulars and the bar's league players. There are plenty of tournaments the better players can do. If I make it too inviting, they'll just come in, play the tournament and not spend a dime because most of them are cheapskates(the local "good" players). So I set up a higher entry banks tournament and take their money.

Here is kind of a shtty one. They had a "4"s and under tournament at Big Dogs last weekend that my wife played in it $8 buy in. They had 8 total players. First place was $25, 2nd was $15. The shtty part about it is they took out $24 green fees or $1 less than what first place got lol.

I look for the entry to available tables ratio. I love to play pool and every minute I'm hanging out waiting for my next match is time I am not playing pool yet it counts against me at home for the time spent playing pool ledger. If it's a small weekly thing or such about an hour and a half is the maximum time I will wait to play. And that better only be about once. I cannot count the number of little tournaments I have packed up and went home from while sitting waiting deep on the winner's side. For this reason I just don't go out much anymore at night unless it's to play someone specifically.

At least it was something. There is literally "zero" action here where I live. Therr used to be all kinds of little friday and Saturday night mini tournaments around, but now there is nothing. And if there is, there is no advertising. It really sucks. And even if first place only paid out 20 or 30 bucks, I wouldn't care. Its not about the money to me. Right now I'm making nothing! Need the competitive aspect.

U I wish tournaments where one day, I'm talking about reg tournament's not events. Two days is hard on people. I would play a lot of Saturday tournaments and start early. No waiting on players . that is just frustrating to me. Outlaw handicap tournaments. Get rid if double elimination. Head sets from now on . and pay top 3 only good god the way we're going with pay out they gonna start passing out trophies just for showing up. IMO u asked.

I would go to a tournament based on the field and how hot the waitresses are.
oh and the payout. not that I ever finish in the money, but one can hope. I think tournament play just like money games are very effective tools for learning, see whats wrong in your game, bc you tend to shorten up and be more carefull, the inconsistencies in your game really show up.

$5 entry seems really cheap. I don't think I've ever played in a tournament with less than about $15 entry fee.

In general the higher the entry the better players you'll get, and the lower entries will attract casual players and the better players might not bother.

It's nice when there's a pro tournament running concurrently. At that point, the entry fee and payout for my own is much more flexible. Aside from that, 100% payout is pretty much the biggest factor. Competition is important of course.

It's NOT about the money,....

It's about Pride !
It's all about the fact that there is no games amongst your fellow like speed opponents in the region. The "show up late," purposeful dogging to take a loss to drop your rating, talking while you are shooting,Racking games are all over there. THEN, you and your fellow players know how good you are/aren't. :p
sometime's this back-fires due to bad luck or just sukking in tourneys. :o

(Did I just say it isn't about the money ??) :smile2:

I play very few tournaments because they start them late and drag them on to 1 or 3 am. They never start early or on time. They don't cut off the number of players for the number of tables being used. ie: 20 players playing one table. Week night tournaments should be run to be over by 10:30pm. Winners rotate between the same two guys week after week. While most are gentleman players there's always a cheat or two that fudge the rules. Also, needs to be a short drive home.

Bars in my area get much better turn out for the weekly Texas Holdum and have given up on pool.

A local brew pub used to have tournaments on lingerie night. Tickets to win a nice lacy-dainty for the little woman were $2. ($5 for the ticket nestled strategically inside the model's top.) Always a good time.
