OB Plus Shafts...

What?

They are still using the SR6 method of construction using a high grade select maple instead of laminate.... How do you see that the construction has been simplified?

I'm guessing because he thought OB was doing the initial lamination.

Seems to me the original construction took a lot more time than the simplified spliced construction being used on the new shafts. Why is there a price increase Royce?

Bob

Actually, the construction work and time is pretty much the same as with the laminated strips. We purchase both.

The solid maple strips do cost more though. Keep in mind that we don't just go buy some hard maple boards and rip them up to make shafts. The process starts all the way back at the selection process of the tree to be cut down. The way the log is milled is different than it would be for normal shafts. The drying process as well as the final sorting is different. I spent the better part of the last year working out all the details with our wood supplier.

Also, keep in mind that our last price increase was quite a while back. I don't even remember when it was exactly, but it was at least 5 years ago or so. Even with our new pricing, we are still very competitively priced in the market price and well below the main competitors. Couple that with the fact that we are still made in the USA and not outsourced makes our value even more competitive.

I hope that explains it.

Will a pro+ be availible for a Cognoscenti?

Probably the best bet for a new + shaft to match a Congescenti would be to purchase a partial and have the joint work matched.

We really try to stick to our core list of joint configurations. Our schedules are very tight, and deviating from them always holds us up too much.

Thanks!

Scott or Royce,

Can you say if these will or will not be cored and filled like the classic shafts?
If so what are you going to use for the filler?

Just my .02 but I found the classic to have a rubbery feel if that makes sense.

I think we (all the pool nuts) are excited to try this shaft out.

I am happy to see you guys are looking to put out a better product.

Might feel rubbery because the majority of the shaft is rubber?

Reference for those who haven't seen how the older OB shafts are cored:

Gotta read closer.

He said the Classic shaft felt rubbery. The Classic shaft is not drilled all the way through like the OB1 and OB2...different construction. The CLassic is solid all the way through except for the last several inches. Royce and Shane have pointed this out many times. The picture you reference is of an OB1 or OB2, not a classic. That orange rubber stuff is not in the Classic.

Yeah gotta read closer. Would have never considered the classic or pro to feel rubbery, so just assumed he was talking about the 1 or 2.

Now we just need someone to snap a classic or pro in half...

Edit: Do you know have they have reduced the front weight by 13%? Have they just thinned up the walls, or maybe using a different foam?

Great question. It appears they have altered the ferrule. It is a bit longer, but no carbon fiber pad. My guess is the pad actually weighs a lot more than the material the ferrule is made out of? Perhaps this accounts for some of the change.

I'd be interested to hear further...I am nuts about this new shaft! I can't wait to try it!

As has been stated, the Classic and the Pro are solid through the middle of the cue shaft, but the OB-1 and OB-2 have a noise dampening core.

All of our current models have what we call our tip end treatment which is our means of reducing tip end mass.

Our new + shafts are really the same. The Classic and Pro are solid, and the OB-1 and OB-2 have the noise dampening core. And, they all have work done on the tip end to reduce mass.

The + shafts tip ends for the OB-1 and OB-2 are pretty close to the same. The Classic and Pro, however, are quite different. There is no carbon fiber pad that is visible from the outside, but it's there. It's actually integrated within the ferrule. You can see it under the tip.

All in all, the average reduction in Tip end Mass is about 13% from our current designs.

OB...+ hit

I like the concept. Change is usually a benefit to bring more people into the fold that shot with P........ I hope they still hit like the OBs and not like the P........

so the revamped line is now just 2 shafts yes? a pro taper and a skinnier conical?

also, OB really needs to post data that supports their deflection claims

And the cues they offer. The ones that look better than half the ones on the market rt now

Agreed!

One additional thing I would like to see OB come out with would be cue extensions to fit their cues, either at the butt end or the joint end.

We have a design for one but probably can't get it to market any sooner than Christmas, too much other new stuff going on and we are growing faster than probably any company in the Billiard Industry right now.

Having Mike D onboard now has he been instrumental in the design of a new break cue or any other products being created by OB. I just got my first OB and love it. I can't wait to get one of the new shafts. I think I might go with the Classic Pro +. I currently use the Classic it seems a bit thick for me. I used to use a Z2. Thanks for coming on here and answering all our questions. You definately seem like a customer oriented company unlike others...

The Classic and Pro are solid.

Royce

Okay so you say the claissc is solid.
To me they felt rubbery...ish

Do you anticipate the new plus shafts will fell the same as the classic or not?
