2014 World 9-Ball Championship

Did Dennis win? He was winning 8-3 only to have Ko come back to make it 8-6. Then I had to commute to work. Did Dennis finish him off?

EDIT: From the chat, they say Dennis won 9-6.

Thank for this. I was in the same boat. Dennis came with a great opening shot at 8-4 and got a tough roll and got stuck. I only saw Ko shoot a few times, and I've seen him in the past. I don't think he's in the same league.

Freddie <~~~ can't beat him

Appleton is getting crushed right now. Can't make a ball against a young taiwanese player, Chang chieh, who isn't making any mistakes. 7-1 right now.

Dennis won, 9 games to 6. Ko Ping Chung went down swinging with the limited chances he had...

Alex got beat by Babica from Poland. Too much snooker I think! Alex missed an easy kick on the two in the last game.

Wouldn't that be a story if he wins the whole thing, qualifying for Stage 2 by the skin of his teeth.

That will definitely be a Cinderella story! It certainly will surpass Ronnie Alcano's feat in the 2006 WPC, who barely got in the round of 64 to win it all. And this will surely be good for the game of pool like when an unknown Chris Moneymaker went on to win the 2003 WSOP main event.

Dazzz won the match 9-8 great comeback

Yeah, in true Appleton style. The guy's really got grit.

Everything looks easy to some players, like SVB, Ko Pin Yi. Everything always seems tough when Darren plays.

His opponent didn't play that poorly, just made a few bad safeties. He needs to work on that part of his game, and he'll be a great player.

Johann Chua was supposed to be eliminated already, but i think a slot was given up in stage 2 so they had to pick the best from those who were eliminated. there were two - Johann Chua and Hideaki from Japan (if you guys remember, Hideaki was the first one to beat Chua, score 7-1. ) good thing Chua was the better player that day and won against Hideaki 5-1.

The 2 records of some sort today are Appleton coming back from being 1-7 down to win 9-8 and Fu Che Wei whitewashing his opponent 9-0

There are a few certainties in this W9B
Certainty #1 Form changes daily.
It is not flavour (player) of the month or week anymore ...it is flavour (player) of the day
When 1st stage qualifiers started, Cheng Chieh and Ping Chung were rock stars as they were first to stroll thru the 1st chance qualifiers while others were struggling. Today they struggled.
I was impressed by Johann Chua when I first saw him played Japan Open where he got into last 4 eventually losing hill hill to Chang. Then in the qualifiers here he struggled and he was no longer the flavor. He managed to squeezed thru to group stage after a Peruvian player withdraw and he had same stats as Hideaki so they played off and he won. And now today he is the flavour again
Yesterday Efren and Lee Van were the comeback kings and everyone was doing song and dance about their clutch performances. Today the flavour switched to Appleton who is the new clutch king. Tomorrow someone else?
This is still group stage and when it comes to knockout stage which starts on day after tomorrow 25Jun, it is different ball game- You can throw out todays form book cos tomorrow and day after tomorrow and the next day have different flavours. In fact those who peaked in form too early in group stages are less likely to go on and win whole thing. if I was picking a winner I would be looking for guys who are on losers side or not doing well but are in last 64

Certainty #2 These ex-champs will not win
Although a statistical one, these ex champions will not win this year
Thorsten
Appleton
Daryl Peach
Thorsten just won last year and only one to win consecutive championship was Earl abt 20 years ago. Earl and Thorsten won their next championship about 10 years apart. Before that the period was shorter 7 years in case of Chao and 5 years of Archer. You can say that competition these days is so much higher so it takes longer time for someone to win 2nd or 3rd championship. If we go on 10 year rule between consecutive championships then that rules out those 3.
Of the remaining 96 players at least half can win it all. So it is highly likely that this year's winner will be a new face. I am hoping some young kid like Wang Can , Ping Chung, Johann Chua, Cheng Chieh will win it as that will be great for the game

Certainty #3 -That guy Ralf Souquet always gets into knockout stages

:D

Only thing that could make it better is a little more prize money. 200K in oil rich Qatar is embarrassing. They could easily go to 250K, with 40-50K for first and now it really seems like a world class event.

It kind of depends who is actually upping the money. If it is the state? Yeah that is nothing.

I have watched oil companies piss away $1,000,000 on drilling rigs doing absolutely nothing productive with that money. I have seen single 10 second slipups due to lack of attention/training that cost millions of dollars.

One tire on a dump truck where I work costs ~$50,000, that is ~$300,000 to replace the 6 tires on one of those trucks... more then the entire purse in this event.

An extra $50,000 is a joke, so is $200,000. That is complete chump change in Qatar when it comes to sponsoring events and attempting to gain international attention.

Mind you, I am not sure how much benefit they even get with the $200,000 and how many people are actually watching the stream or even know that the event is occurring. Sadly you could still get more people to watch the World Hopscotch Championships then a pool tournament.
