At my expense. lol Trying to keep it light on here for a change....
So my brother and I decided to play some straight pool tonight for the first time.
50 point match. We finished in about....................................
1hr and 30 min!!!!! Lots of 1 and outs!!
I won 50 to 47.
But we drank a few and had a good time.:D
And both said how much we like the game despite how we suck.
That BIG 7 ball run (with a break ball) has me hooked. We will definitely be mixing Straights into our weekly routine. Hopefully 50 pts. will be a warm-up soon!
----Gotta go watch The Hustler!!!

Then we watched P.I.I.T.H. So maybe we will improve!!
**He never saw it. Damn. Maybe I shouldn't have shown him my "secret"!

Forgot to mention we both play LOCK UP SAFETIES!!!!!!! Makes the match much longer. ;)
(Accidental, lock up safeties.....) haha

I'm an old guy and I love that game. When I try to explain it to folks who aren't familiar with it they laugh and say "any ball, any pocket, how hard can that be?"

I just smile and tell them to try it and they'll like it.

I told him we should at least be running 10's! lol
Love it though. Next time I will try and summon my inner Willie!!
BTW I'm 44 and my little brother is 27. He liked it. So there is hope........

Hey 9andout. We're about the same age.
I appreciate and respect your efforts at 14.1.
Not an easy game for sure. But then, is there really an easy pool game?

Keep up the practice!;)

Nobody young plays it and they dont know what their missing. Its arguably the best pool game. When I was 12 and went to the new pool hall (with 15 gc1's) every day after school this is the game me and everyone there played.

14.1 is THE game! It has it all and will give you a foundation like no other game.

Case in point: How many times in an eight or nine-ball game have you or your opponent hesitated at breaking a cluster? In straight pool, clusters rule! They're your friend and, used properly, offer options not available with other layouts.

Congrats on choosing 14.1 and good luck!

Play Safe!

reminds me of my first try at snooker

I tried snooker for the first time at an old pool hall that let you play pool for so much an hour or a quarter a game, your choice. The snooker tables were viciously tight, set up for golf. Of course my friend and I were both using pool cues, I don't remember if I even knew there were snooker cues then! When we got through playing I walked up to the counter and told the owner I'd pay by the hour, I would rather pay by the hour than admit how many games we played!

Good luck with the straight pool. I'm sure you and your brother will get the hang of it rapidly. Once you start really working on cue ball control and start using bridge balls and such it should get a lot easier. A big thing is don't take off balls now that you are going to need later to help you move around the table.

Glad to hear you tried the game. It is a great game, an open pallet without numbered balls dictating your every move. If you think you're hooked now, wait till you start putting racks together.

Honestly, I genuinely don't understand how anyone could get satisfaction playing rack after rack of 9 or 10 ball. I read all the time everyone with jump sticks and break speed apps., its nuts to me.

Its ok for maybe 20 minutes, but this redundant monotonous smash the rack apart and see where they end up crap is so boring.

I know everbody is playing 9 and 10 ball, I try to like it, but as much as I enjoy pool, these games bore me.

Welcome to the depth and endless challenge of straight pool!

Im 36 and my buddy taught me the game a couple years ago. To me, it is THE Game to play. It will greatly improve your shot making. And as easy as it seems now, be prepared to learn something new each time you play. A lot more strategic than you will originally give it credit for.

Its an awesome game.

My son wanted to learn to play a few years ago so I explained the rules to him, showed him a few of the break shots and some strategy to the game. He decides he has seen enough and wanted to play a quick game to 50, so I say ok I will break and he said "No way I want to break" so I let him and he call the head ball in the side  well he breaks the rack as hard as he can and didn't make a ball:eek: well I get up and run 55 and out on him and he looks at me and says I guess I should have let you break

What kind of break cue were you using?

I was playing some straight pool last night as a matter of fact. There was an eight ball league going on and a SL 7 comes over and asks to practice with me. I said sure, but I'm playing straight pool. I explained it a little and he said "I'll give it a try". And just like everyone who plays the game for the first time "Any ball, in any pocket? Sounds easy!". We played two races to 50 in about two hours and he's hooked.

Among all the fundamentals this game will improve, it's has improved my confidence in pocketing balls. Often the hardest shot is the one in the middle if the run

Straight pool is indeed a great game. Perhaps the best, and pool in what I consider it's purest form. I should play it more often, but I think the reason I don't is that it requires so much thought and intense focus that I can a lot of times be too lazy to play the game.

I would love to play 14.1, problem is I have a hard time finding people who want to not play in a bar.

Believe it or not, I played some straight pool in a bar on an old Dynamo/Valley barbox.

That was weird experience. They open up the table for free at 6pm, and I was the only one there who wanted to play at the time. Try moving the balls around with super slow cloth, high humidity and a tip made of petrified leather.

It's a great game regardless of the equipment though! I am the only guy I know my age who plays the game.

I consider bar box 9-ball to be the purest form of pool, straight pool is second.
Maybe it's the other way around, I could be way off on that one.
