Spring loaded carriage for taig WTB

If you already have a Taig lathe just add the spring to your existing carriage..... that only cost a couple of bucks.
 
I have no idea how to do that. I looked at plenty if pictures online on spring loaded carriages but I never could understand how to do it. They look taller then mine. And the ball bearing, I have a idea about how it attaches but still. Also I thought if the cost of the entire assembly is reasonable I could just buy it. A new carriage is like 60$. If a spring loaded new one is 150$ or below I would just but it. But if it's crazy expensive like 300$+ then I would seek other alternatives.
 
Drop a spring in the groove of the carriage. The bearing and mount (and the spring) can all be bought from Chris.
 
post a pic of your carriage so we can see how many cross slides are on it.......... and them someone will tell you how to do it

If you think they all look taller than yours, then they probably are. Everything has to be raised up on risers if you want to turn/taper. I had to put everything of mine on risers (headstock, tailstock, steadyrests, etc..) and add a compound slide on my lathe to get everything raised up.

If the "bolt" you are referring to is the cross slide screw assembly...... then Yes, that has to be removed and that groove is where the spring will go.

I agree with Kim, when you get off work, post some pics so we can see what you have and then we'll see what you are working with.

I am guessing at what you want to do. Do you have a Taper Bar? Besides the carrage you will need a machined attachment for a mandrel and the mandrel.

If this is not it and you just want to taper butts you can simply off set your tailstock.

On either you should have a slow steady power feed for an almost like sanded cut.

You might come out cheaper as a DIY but IMO the frustration of trying you are better off getting a complete kit and be done with it. I would guess about 1K.

This is how my carriage looks like.
 
Take a pair of large pliers, like a pair of channel lock pliers, and turn the knob to your cross slide to the left (lefty loosey, righty tighty) and that will remove the cross slide knob and screw assembly. The groove in the carriage where the cross slide screw is right now is where the spring will go. From there your cross slide will slide back on and be spring loaded.

NOW...... you will have to add another top slide or a compound slide, onto the cross slide you already have, to get it raised up to the correct level. You will also have to put risers under everything else such as your headstock, tailstock, and steadyrests to get them to the same height as your now spring loaded carriage.

The last pic is the bearing and mount bracket for the bearing. All that can be gotten from Chris Hightower including the spring.
 
Yessss exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the instructions. Where did you get the piece that attaches the top slide to the bottom slide?
