The wobbles

Al, that's sticking out way too much and you need tapered collets.
If you bore from that setup, you're going to get too much chatter.

Sorry that pic was just of the plug to show the tool I used for facing. Here is a pic of the shaft setup. You are right I need to make some collets. I have some that came with my lathe but they are all split and I don't have any luck getting them to stay put when I use them in a steady rest. I will be making some shortly. As you can see I try not to have the piece stuck out of the chucks very far. uploadfromtaptalk1407085023326.jpg

Make collets that match your taper. That should make a world of difference.

If it is the same all the way around then the hole is straight and so are the threads.

Now I have an old Clausing metal lathe and I use the same tool you have for facing and sometimes I have to face a couple of times to get right and my cross feed weights 60 lbs. You are using a deluxe and with just hand pressure on the cross feed it can vary 2 or 3 thou. Make sure the shaft is straight and then face again, should fix the problem.



I have not refaced it again. I have a deluxe. The shaft does not have finish on it and is about .010" small from the butt. The mismatch feels even all the way around. The tool I used was a PCD diamond shape from kennametal for the facing.View attachment 348970
 
If you put your shaft between centers in the lathe and spin, that should give you the answer if you shaft is straight.

Facing did it!

I listened to Alex about the pressures that can happen on the cross slide. I indicated the shaft back in and let it spin. I had to spin it pretty fast to get it off balance so I knew it wasn't warped. I moved my cross slide into position and locked it down like normal. Here is where I altered normal. I didn't grab onto the handle this time. I turned it by the outside radius of the screw and did everything I could to not put any pressure on it. I brought it in and put the cue together and it rolls perfect on the table and on the rail the tip doesn't wobble.

Great to hear. One bit of advice at this point is to re-check the cross slide setscrews and use a dial indicator on the cross slide to make sure as you turn it with the handle, not the outside ring, the cross slide stays straight., as what you found maybe due to some of those screws not adjusted right. Those keep changing as the gibs wear. I have found similar issues in the past and every so often it bits me because I forget to check every so often.
