Please do not post in this poll if you are not a regular tournament player.

By a regular tournament player, I mean that you either play in local tournaments on a regular basis (once a month) or that you regularly play in regional and national tournaments at least 3 times per year.

NOTE: This is a PUBLIC poll where your answers will be publicized. I don't expect anyone that does not regularly play in tournaments to answer the poll questions but invite all AZB posters to comment.

Thanks,
JoeyA

I will start. I prefer AMATEUR tournaments since I am an amateur and I have a chance to at least cash in these events.

However, I play in all tournament Open, Handicapped and Amateur events primarily to test myself in all events, as I believe this is where you can gauge your level of play.

I am torn...I hate to donate, but I like to beat- or at least put up a fight against:o- players that would be considered pro-level.

What he said. ^^^^^^^.

I read your rules but will post anyway LOL
I rarely compete but would rather get smoked by a pro playing even then give a guy the 5 and out that can run racks

Good poll!

I prefer amateur tournaments because well, I'm an amateur and it gives me a chance to face competition that still near or above my level.

Open tournaments are fun too, and force me to practice, bring my A-game and really expose my weaknesses so I know what I need to work on. Most open tourneys here are seeded though, so it's extremely tough for any amateur to advance because you usually have to go through a wall of pros from the get-go. After taking a beating at an open event, my game is usually near its peak, so I like to hit up a local tourney or play league right after and win a few matches to get my confidence back and that's when I have the most fun.

Playing better players as an underdog is probably best for your game, but I think being a favorite is important as well, as you get in the habit of winning, and there usually aren't any easy matches anyway because you always have players giving it their all, trying to take you down.

I play in local (non handicapped) tourneys a couple of times a month (never seen anyone barred from playing in them, including players barred from most amateur events). And, I try to play in bigger regional ones occasionally (has more to do with timing of tourneys than anything) that have players that are pro speed (McGrath, Klatt, Bowman, McMinn, Ike, etc. live pretty close, and play in many). I guess many would call it donating if the pro caliber players are in it, but I write it off as experience, and entertainment.

I view it like I view golf....if I play well, that's all I care about. Say, I shoot even par on a tough course, I don't care if I play match play against a guy who regularly shoots 5 under. Good for him. I'm playing MY game. I played really well in a match at the Derby this year, probably as good as I ever have....and lost to Shannon Murphy. Am I supposed to regret putting up the money only to draw a BEAST?! No, I enjoyed the match, and will hopefully draw someone of equal skill next year.

I like open only cuz I like too play better players then me but like handicapped or amateur also

Why I voted handicap

It's not for the handicap at all. In fact, I'm trying to cash enough to get raised, because I look at it as a badge of honor. The tournaments I attend have 2 types.

Open - Anybody can play, no handicap. Generally they get 25 to 45 players.

No Master - It is handicapped as either advanced players or novice. I prefer this because they get 80 to 96 players. So more money to make and a funner experience in my opinion.

Any Tournament Any Time for me

I like to play in any and all pool tournaments if my wife and daughters (Ages 16 and 12) do not have a problem with my time away from the family. Sometimes this requires a small bribe on my part (read Little Shopping Spree or Extra House-Related tasks to complete). As far as the competition goes I love Open, Amateur or Handicapped.......really doesn't matter to me. If I could only choose one type I would pick Open as then I may get a chance to play against really well-known players. I recently competed in Texas Open where I won my first two matches and then lost my next two (James Davis, Jr. who finished 4th & Shane Manaole who finished 7th). I probably finished right where I belong.....one out of the money......but I loved that I got the chance to play these two individuals. I had luckily beaten James Davis, Jr. in a short race to 7 a month prior so I knew he would not take me lightly this time and he proceeded to give me a beatdown of 9-3. Shane Manaole beat me worse 9-1 as the dog came out late on Sunday night....hahaha. The previous big tournament I played in was the Space City Open in December 2013 and I finished 9th-12th and managed to beat Gabe Owen 9-6 after leading 8-2. That field was strong with Jeremy Jones, Hillbilly, Justin Hall, Skylar Woodward, Richie Richeson, Sylver Ochoa, Ronnie Wiseman, Robert Frost, Robb Saez etc. Sometimes you get a favorable draw and sometimes you don't.........but really as a 56 year old once a week league player......I must say I probably am a bit delusional about my chances of beating players like this......but I love competing and will do so again in a little over two weeks at the Houston 9Ball Open. Rack 'em up and let's get it on.
