Hated to do it but it had to be done.... Steve Lomax graciously sent me 2 original medium Moori tips to put thru testing while I was working on our new M/H Ki-Tech... After running enough COR tests to have an adequate data set I put them both aside... Tonight I put one on an OB Pro Shaft and I will be recording test results on it as it goes thru play over the next several months...

All I can say is yes they did play that good... The spin/speed ratio and feel were dead on the money for my liking.. I am going to see exactly how long it stays in spec.... From what I recall they used to make it 3 months before I felt the need to replace them... Tonight this one only got to hit about 100 shots but those are logged and we are off and running....

If you can duplicate an old moori medium, many a pool player will rejoice. They should have never stopped making the old ones.
 
I have heard that the old ones were a really great product. I honestly don't know anyone who uses these tips at the moment. The Renfro, have you tested out Kamui tips before? I am just curious because I am currently playing with one. After it gets wore down I am going to try out one for you soft tips.

I have numbers on a lot of the major tips out but not the ones I really am interested in.... Everything so far has been based off of new tips... Since tips "usually" change because of impact these numbers are only somewhat useful... My intention is to do an impact test at some point in the future when time permits that will let me show the different tips when new and then thru so many impacts so the change can be charted and people understand more of what they truly play with....

I had a player lose her chit so to speak a few weeks ago because I told her her Kamui SS was likely not a Kamui SS after having it on the cue for over a year... She like many of the players on here was adamant that they would NOTICE.... All I could do was laugh....

Since the changes happen daily and gradually most people don't realize it until they get a new tip and then tho go wow I really like this or wow this is nothing like the one I just had on.... it sucks.....

Lets say you have had a tip on 6 months and are playing great with it, maybe the best you have ever played in your life... Originally maybe it was a moori slow... It delaminates... Do you A, Buy another slow and have to wait on the break in for it to play like what you just had or B, Buy the moori medium?? These are the things that keep me up at night... LOL

Sorry to get off topic,but haven't heard anything about the white chalk in awhile.How is that coming along?

Just wondering if you have done any testing on the Ultra Skin? I like it real well and was wondering how it holds up. May try yours when I replace it.

This was the secret of the original milk dud from long ago. Hard tips weren't in style and most tips got much harder as you played with them. The original milk dud, without being pressed down to less than it's original height or slightly less, stayed consistent for months or years playing a straight pool style of play.

If your tips stay the same or move slightly in hardness and stabilize you will have a great tip, just like a few had in the seventies and eighties.

I'll be stocked up at the Open on all grades so I won't have excuses as to why you don't have any yet. Especially after you were so gracious to send me the old stock Mooris.. Will let you and Joe hit the M/H side by side with the Moori if things continue to progress the way they have been and let you give me feedback on it.... It's all I can do right now to keep up with orders... Having to double production for the month again =D

Ohhh and about that Brunswick 26 1/2 LOL... I'll make sure we iron out the build while we are there...
 
The Moori Medium now has a whole whopping 5 hours on it.. There is just a hint of mushrooming and the Shore D has already moved up 2 points... Will test the COR tomorrow before I go out to play and see how much it has changed... I could not have told you it was that little bit harder just from hitting it... It may have stabilized tho and we won't see any more changes from the first ones as far as hardness is concerned at least... COR may keep changing for a while tho...

Will check back in when the tip changes or weekly with number of hours logged and Shore D measurements.....

Have you tried different types of glue and different application methods to see it that changed the hardness at all?
 
I'm sure the major tip companies could make a tip that lasts for years, but why would they? They want the tips to wear out like they do. If they could charge $50 a tip, it might work out, but we all know not many will pay that for a tip. Johnnyt

Not too many of these to test on.... From what I remember these tended to stay the same for 3-4 months or that was how long I used to play them before getting new ones... I don't expect this one to change much more after the initial break in... Will see...

Tips and Chalk are indeed consumables and will wear out with use... If you have your own lathe or do your own installs the life cycle of a tip really doesn't matter much..

In the old days players tended to play a tip until it was a danger to the ferrule and then have it replaced... I can remember there was always a pretty lengthy break in period while you got the new tip beat in to where you could trust it.. Noone wanted to lose a tip in a tournament or your goose was pretty cooked...

Today players are a little more educated and aware and tend to do regular maintenance if they have access to installers on a consistent basis... In some areas it's still a pita to have tips done and players have to go out of their way....

The biggest thing I see as an issue is performance consistency thru the life cycle... You can keep a tip on for years right now.. But if it's not a hard tip it's likely not playing the same a year after it was installed... Most hard will even change some... And the thing is there is no light that comes on to say it's time to swap it out because it's out of spec or maye there is a layer delaminating and it's not the top one so you can't see it....

I am sure everyone has ran into a night or 3 of playing bad that makes no sense and then had the tip replaced and picked back up.. Maybe that's all in our heads but I don't think so
