Why on earth would this happen?
I remember a conversation at the bar table in feb that shane said he would pick earl and there was a bunch of older players and fellow professionals saying why> they were saying he should go with a young gun like bergman, woodward, dechaine, hall etc

why would this happen?? I know svb grew up watching earl but he basically eliminated any chance of them winning.

when will people and fans get away from earl who in honesty is a disgrace to the game. archer also is well respected top guy but move on and get some new blood in. well done mark Wilson for having the bottle to change it, might be rough intitially but got to start somewhere.

Chinese Taipei England A Netherlands and phillipines are my bet for this event

3 MAIN points for your consideration (read between the lines)

1) Shane respects Earl, and perhaps spoke to Matchroon

2) Earl brings viewership, UK revels the rivalry

3) They are possibly the only 2 USA-ers in '13 MCup  that played on the 100% sguare

(It's my birthday, so I ask for a pass)

Yeah you get a pass but I had to highlight the why... Shane and Earl.... Earl respects Shane and Shane seems to get Earl.... If anyone wants to bet something against them match per match assuming it's streamed I am your huckleberry..... I think Earl and Shane have some accounts to settle from December and neither of them have forgotten about it for 1 second.....

Not too many get this hi-lighted part of your post. Very well stated Chris. Not for a second of THAT embarrassment. Barry, Luke and co get it, along with all the ramifications they can see.

earl's intelligence of the game + SVB's talent = perfect combination

Because Earl Strickland is a five time US Open Champion, three time World Champion and amazing player?

I don't see all the "young guns" heading to NYC to gamble against Earl. Shane has the utmost respect for Earl's game.

Shane could have picked anybody he wanted. He chose Earl Strickland. That's all there is to it. Combined, Earl & SVB have won 8 U.S. Open's and God only knows how many World Championships ... they are good friends ... they respect each other ... THEY WANT TO WIN ... All these people saying that Earl is past his prime or that he's a liability ... give me a break. He's still got more firepower and desire than most players half his age - and he can still hit a gear that most can't handle. That's why we're still talking about him. :)

I think none of us, or very few of us, are even remotely qualified to question
SVB's decision. He knows what he is doing. I hope! Lol

I guess he just doesn't have your pool knowledge.

I've been watching a lot of earls matches lately one cuz he's a great players 2 he's funny as hell all the wolfing he does lol I think they will both do great both amazing players

What`s wrong with Picking Earl?
I personally don`t like Earls manners at the table, but few know more about pool than Earl and he still is a fantastic shotmaker.
When Earl plays rather than talk, he is one of my favourite players to watch.

It's pure speculation, but I'd guess Matchroom pressured Shane to pick Earl. Earl might not be one of my first ten choices to team up with Shane in this event.

I'll be happy to eat crow if I'm wrong, but I give this team almost no shot at winning the event. Shane and Mike D, who beat Earl 25-11 recently in an exhibition match, would be a much, much stronger team.

The image of the quality of American pool at the table continues to suffer, and this pairing will reinforce in the eyes of the world how far we have fallen.

One day, I hope to attend the World Cup of Pool, but I'll probably pass on it until America chooses to show up with its best players.

Shane didn't pick Dechaine because the format will not be "rack your own" where Mike excels at arranging the balls in such a way, as to secure a win. Similar to "Trick shots"...only "Trick Racking."

Because I can now invite friends around for a cook out and watch Earl 'The Pearl' and the inevitable fireworks.
Without Earl there be no cook out. Just me on my lonesome and a few cans...
EARL IS A CROWD DRAW!!!

I think Shane picked earl because earl is one of his idols! Mike isn't ready for that type of match! Anybody can beat anyone in exhibition matches, to me, they mean nothing!

Shane picked earl because he knows when it comes to crunch time, earl will get the job done!

very well stated, I know earl is a top player was/is. but they played before did not do so well earl meltdown a mosconi was another public spectacle of usa's decline in the pool world and it looks set to continue. its a shame.
