It just looked like Mike took over 5 mins to rack the balls then exchanged words with Shane. Shane broked and pushed and then Mike took like 5 mins looking, got down on the shot then gave it back to Shane. On Shane's last shot he over ran the cue ball and Mike had a clear shot, got down and decided to use a bathroom break first. I don't know but i was just annoyed watching that guy. Great player though.
 
I didn't see the match, but the scenario that you described is the reason that I am an advocate of shot clocks.

By the way, I thought the term was hill/hill but I could be wrong.
 
Shane had control of the table in the double hill rack but failed to execute the safety that would have won it.

Great match with great play both ways by all accounts.

Perhaps this has become the best rivalry in American pool. Among the Americans in 2014, almost nobody but Mike Dechaine seems to know how to beat Shane on the big tables, although Sossei beat Shane at the Steinway Classic last month.

Tough event for the Mosconi 8, represented by Shane Van Boening (9th), Jeremy Sossei (13th), Brandon Shuff (9th), and Oscar Dominguez (65th). Not one of them reached the final day.

Meanwhile, three of the top four Joss tour members are still in: Dechaine, Shaw and Strickland, and their combined record is, I believe, 17-1.
 
sjm, you saw the match in person? Stream didn't have any sound. How you feel about that match? Am I over thinking what I saw?

No, I didn't see the whole match, but other posters have noted that level of play was exceptional, as it usually is with these two. Upstate Al pointed the stream camera at their table so viewers caught the last fifteen minutes or so of the match. So yes, I did see the part of the match referred to in the original post and most of the rack was visible. Shane made a ball on the break but had to push, so that's a bit unlucky.

Wish it had been the stream match, but I guess you can't have everything. Tomorrow should be great. Several world beaters left!

Players pull all types of moves, some more then others. I am all for he shot clock,it will cut down on the moves also.

As great as Shane plays his stroke at times is what gets him in trouble, causes him to over run his cue ball...hello 50 yd line.

It cost him in China and overseas and will continue to do so if he does not learn to short stroke, or use it when needed.

It takes 5 miles for an aircraft carrier to stop if you shut the power, it's the same thing with a pool stroke (Controlling Mass)

If people don't think great players could use a coach they are mistaken.

From what we were able to see it looked like Mike was doing everything right.

The rack seemed difficult to freeze all balls and he and Shane discussed it and finally got it done.

During the last rack MD was smiling and chatting a little with SVB, that all seemed pleasant.

Mike had a break to take if he wanted and when he got control of the table he took his break.

whether it was his Jackie Gleason moment to go splash his face and collect himself or just to step away from the intense pressure of the moment or who knows, maybe it was time to use the bathroom??? None of it really matters, it was his option.

That MD was getting down on the shot a few times and thinking for a long time about how to proceed told me that it wasn't a straight forward decision. Whether to again play SVB safe or go offensive apparently was a close call.

I believe MD conducted himself like a gentleman, gave appropriate thought and consideration to a tough table layout at hill-hill against America's top gun, then made his decision and executed it for the win. :thumbup:

Nothing at all wrong with that, imo. :)

Since you were there you must have stayed for the last round on the loser's side. Shane and Jayson on the TV table, both decided to rack their own. No more five minute racking sessions trying to get a tight rack. Each guy just got up, racked the balls quickly, and broke them. Must not have been that hard to get a tight rack for themselves, because they pretty much made the wing ball every time.:wink:

wasn't there; just watched what we could see on the stream.

also did see a fair amount of racking problems in the earl/jeremy match as well as the jeremy vs hatch match.

I don't think all of the tables are racking easily. :wink:

Being there can be a real eye opener, especially at this event. At TS you can sit so close to the players you can hear them breathing. You catch all of the side remarks and accusations and are left with a pretty clear picture of the problem. Or course, all the pros know about and understand all this much more than I can, if for no other reason than that they are playing and talking with each other all the time.


As just one example, there is this from yesterday:


Player One: "Do you like that rack?"

Player Two: "Yeah, it's perfect."

Player One: "Right, and it's way better than any rack you've given me for the last eight games."


A bit later in the same match...


Player Two: "Is that rack OK?"

Player One: "Yup. I knew you had one honest rack in you somewhere."


Bottom line is lots of funny stuff is going on. Like the line in the movie, "Everybody's doin' it." Some just do it a lot better than others. Is it cheating? As long as the opponent retains the right to inspect and reject the rack, I'm really not sure I'd call it cheating. In the end, it's a real hard thing to stop because most solutions would degrade the game as we know it.
 
Ralf S did the same slow rack in the finals of a tournament in Aruba 5 or so years ago. His opponent was from Japan and I don't remember his name. Ralph had been taking 10 seconds to rack the entire match. His opponent got on a roll and was quickly running out rack after rack. Ralph then took 3-4 minutes to rack the next rack. His opponent dry broke damn Ralph ran out the rack for the win.

looked like it to me, he is a great shot but i just dont care for him.
 
I watched this match in person....they both were laughing about the rack at the start, but then it got more serious. Shane down 8-4 could not produce a rack good enough for dechaine so he lost his temper and threw the rack and balls across the table. dechaine racked himself, broke dry and Shane ran out to the hill from there.

Never saw him lose his cool before.
 
one would really have to be a di*kh*ad to get SVB to act like that. Mike can fit that bill.
