Dear Gentle Readers,

That Woody Allen quote set off an inquiry process in the precisely-calibrated mechanism which is otherwise known as my personal brain. The quote reminded me of a question I’ve been wondering about re: pool players … specifically, those who gamble for a living.

Is there any one player, past or present, who enjoys the reputation of making bank consistently?

Of course everyone books an occasional losing proposition. But I wonder if there is some renowned someone who takes home the cheese on a regular basis. Or, someone in the misty days of yore, who took home the money on a regular basis.

I’m not referring to tournament wins, nor trophies, nor photo ops, nor endorsement contracts.

Cash.

Financial disclosure is my life,

Sunny

Money is the root of all evil. Give me yours and I'll dispose of it for you.

Seriously, while no player in history can claim to have never lost money, there are quite a few who have made a "living" over the years. It requires a variety of skills beyond just knowing how to play.

When I used to gamble, people whose money I took tended not to want to see me again.

Then again I had a buddy who could take all the money in the house, yet had the personality to be invited back to take some more!!

Most top players win a very high percent of the time. Richie Ambrose once told me he probably won 90% of the time. The problem was the 10% would bust him. They don't seem to manage their money very well.

There is a famous story one player likes to tell about having $300,000. at one time and losing all of it in a short time. That is a lot of money to have at one time and throw away.

I have a friend who did a drug deal way way back. It was a one time thing and he never was involved in such a thing again. He took a shot and got away with it. He is worth millions now and that drug deal was the seed money.

Most pool players are to stupid to know what to do with money. Even those who get their hands on pool rooms often lose it gambling with the money they need to pay the bills. There seems to be something messed up with pool players when it comes to money.

Biz on the street isn't good these days.

I may have to sell off some of my Harleys to stay active in the Biz.

Ya know, when yer a Biz Man like me, ya gotta Go All In sometimes and Back It and Jack It.

Its tough sometimes. I have to be able to keep up with Johnny Depps tattoo artist and all.

BTW, if I haven't mentioned it before, (100 times at least), I know Johnny Depp's tat artist. But I can't tell ya anything on JD. Its street Biz and have to keep it on the Down Low.
