World Cup of Pool 2014(Portsmouth, UK) 23-28Sep (9ball Scotch Doubles) Winner $60K

Yep as Ted Lerner correctly predicted it is upset by Qatar over Taiwan 7-5
Majeed lost his shot in last rack and gave Taiwan another chance but Hsu consecutively messed up. The weak link for Taiwan is Hsu probably inexperience and nerves

Now I can see many bettors going to Ted Lerner for tips :D

CT never did settle into this match. The break turned out to be their Achilles Heel for sure.

Tough to get rolling when you make multiple illegal breaks...

Anxious to see how Holland comes out...

After the first three sessions, Finland (Immonen, Makkonen) look the best. Qatar looked good starting out against Taipei, but safety play looked very suspect. Austria looked very strong as well.

The teams you would expect to do well, Philippines and China looked pretty shaky. Some good sessions coming up this afternoon and tomorrow. Holland (Van Den Berg, Feijen), USA (Van Boening, Strickland) and England A(Appleton, Boyes) play in the 1:00pm EST session while Germany(Souquet, Hohmann), Canada(Pagulayan, Morra) and England B(Peach, Melling) play tomorrow.

Shaping up to be an exciting few days.

Today's results

Afternoon session:

Poland (9) 7-4 Australia
China (3) 7-5 Czech Republic
Chinese Taipei (6) 5-7 Qatar

Up next

Sept. 24 - Wednesday evening - 6pm local time (10 am Pacific, 1 pm Eastern, 1 am Manila time)

Holland (2) v Sweden
USA (5) v Croatia
England A (4) v Spain

I'm interested to see how Holland does this year. I think all three of these matches have the potential to be close...maybe some upsets.

It was pointed out by Jimmy Wyche that no team has ever successfully defended this title...interesting point. Makes calling the Philippine the favorite a little misleading.

The Philippine tandem of Dennis Orcullo and Lee Vann Corteza has been really shaky this year, they just got beat by a couple of 14 year olds more than a week ago, and one of them is a girl!

It wasn't just a run of the mill tournament, first place pays $40,000 and I'm sure there was no half-hearted effort on their part.

If there's one team there who can repeat, it's definitely Team Philippines, so I wouldn't say betting on them is a bad bet.

It's been a bad habit of the Filipinos to be a bit shaky in the first round, when a loss will knock you out of the tournament, but once
these 2 guys settles in, they can definitely shake off those jitters and shift to a different gear when they are in a position to smell the dough!

:) It was the team-up of Dennis Orcullo/Carlo Biado who were eliminated by the 14 year olds in the recently concluded Manny Pacquiao tournament.

However, I do agree that Orcullo/Corteza have to work harder their next game if they want to defend their title.

They replayed the ending of last year's finals after the late session yesterday. The look on Lee Van's face when Orcullo left him long and awkward on the 8 was priceless...then of course he makes a great shot to get out of it.

I think PI will get it together the 2nd round...as will China. If those two teams get on a roll, watch out. Goes for the seeded teams playing today as well.

I missed the Austria match, just saw highlights, but the largest package I've seen so far has been 3 or 4. In these short sets, it wouldn't surprise me to see a set put on another team.

I don't think it's so much working harder, as working smarter and relaxing. I think they're taking the defense of their title pretty seriously and it is putting more pressure on them.

Ooops! ay mali! My bad!

... but on the lighter side, Carlo "Cool" Biado is not much different from Van-Van, skills-wise.

It must be your lucky day!

Skill wise, yeah. But Van Van seems to do much better under pressure.

I beg to disagree D.

Carlo's first year here in the US was all pressure, he even played and placed in games he hasn't played his whole life in the Derby City,
like one pocket, and placed high in banks too. He won a few tournaments in 8 ball, 9 ball and 10 ball here with a very tough field...

One team to not underestimate is the Germans. Soquet and Hohmann have played together before a few times with really good results I believe. Also, they were on the same bonus ball team so they have that doubles experience also.

Thorsten is on a roll right now, just took down the Pacman Singles tournament and just
got beat in the Scotch Doubles with John Morra in the finals a couple of weeks back...

IMHO, 3 things are consistent in such high level world class tourneys
1) Defending champs very seldom win back to back champ these days in high level world class tourneys. Don't talk tourneys of 50 or 100 years ago where competition is less and you can. FIFA WC used to have back to back champs 50 to 100 years ago but these days almost impossible. Same with World Cup of Pool or W9B
No team has won back to back in World Cup of Pool history and no one has won back to back W9B since Earl 20+ years ago,

2) The top teams that do very well in early rounds do not always get deep into tourney. Vice versa the top teams that play badly or almost lost in early rounds are more likely to end up deep into semis or final . Remember last year when England B Peach/Meiling whitewashed Germany (not just some small minnow team) 7-0 ? Until they met Finland in quarters and that was end of their fairytale. Remember last year when England A Appleton/Boyes whitewashed Indonesia 7-0 in first round ? They were stopped by Taiwan in quarters having to sit for most of match.
It is actually better for teams like Phil and China to face life or death match in early round so that they are pumped up and prepared fast for later rounds rather than have easy early rounds

3) I forgot what is the 3rd thing. Must be getting old LOL:D

Anyone think earl and shane can beat appleton and boyes at speed pool?
