The 8 ball provided some excitement in the final game of the final match of this year's World Cup of Pool.

Vandenberg leaving Feijen poor shape on the 8 ball, then Neils missing the 8 ball.

Karl Boyes coming to the table to shoot a easy to medium difficult shot on the 8 and missing but getting very lucky with a fortunate roll.

I was watching Karl very carefully in this pot and I noticed that his eye pattern on the 8 ball shot was such that, he looked at the cue ball last, instead of looking at the object ball last. Just wonder if that is what caused the miss. The pressure was significant no doubt but I think looking at the cue ball last cost him the shot. Good camera work to allow me to see that.

Nederland had no choice but to go down swinging with Lady Luck and did.

9 Ball may be the most exciting game and it is because of the luck factor and the unpredictability of the spread of the balls after the break etc.

I think most players when they jack, look at the cue-ball last.

If Geno sees the replay on that shot, he could tell you for sure why Karl missed that shot. :yeah:

I didn't like the shape Feijen left Vandenberg on the 7? Think he should have left him a higher so he could have punched the cue towards the 9?

Your right about his eyes on the shot, looks like he rushed it before he looked back at the 8, pressure!

I feel Nick should have drawn off the seven.

Yes, Feijen could have left him a different and better angle. Neils played extremely well at times, like most of the players but this shape was a bit off.

Shape: in hindsight, punching to short, to long rail, coming out two rails for the 8 probably more solid route
Eyes: maybe eye pattern was irregular, but looking at cueball last is in no way an inferior aiming method. Is personal preference. Ask O'Sullivan, Hendry, Souquet. Who shift between CB and OB last, depending on shot, mood, confidence etc
 
simply put, "play what the table gives you"...instead of jacking up, just make the ball and follow and even though it makes the nine ball shot a little longer, either make the nine or play safe. Imho chalk their loss up to mental error for the shot selection on the 8..
 
I find it strange that the blame for losing a match is attributed to the last mistake. All of the ones that cost frames earlier in the match were equally as important.

It did make for great telly though!
 
Here's a screen cap of the shot Boyes missed yesterday. It's not just the shot that was difficult, but the fact he is also had to get shape on the 9.

I imagine the majority of people on this forum would have a tough time (on a similar table) making the 8 and getting shape on the 9, and that's without the pressure of it being hill/hill in a major event.

After Karl missed the 8 and slopped safe, was the 8 frozen to the cushion? What was Nick trying to do with his kick shot hitting it so hard?

It looked froze to me and two other players.
So he couldn't lay on it.

I saw Efren thin it off two rails and left it long.....where the 9 was, I think it would've been
a good choice.

Shape on the 9 was pretty natural. He only over cut the 8 slightly and ended up straight in on the 9.

Making the ball is easy

Getting shape is easy

Doing both? That's the hard part.

I'd love to see someone try it 10 times to see how they do. I might even give it a go in the next few days..
