All Japan Championships

I believe you folks put too much stock in the Mosconi Cup. It's a paid exhibition team event made for television. Nothing more.

The All Japan is a world class WPA sanctioned individual tournament. For those not paying attention, pool is largely an individual sport.

I was merely making the point that Shane should be there, not that the whole team should be...

My belief is that it is more important for SVB and the game in the US for him to do well in ALL WPA ranking events and possibly hold the #1 World Ranking.

That is all. Best wishes,

Ask a golfer, Ryder Cup or Japanese Open....

Ha. I was all excited when I heard SVB was going to be there, and then disappointed when I learned he wasn't. What a terrible decision.

Skip a world class tournament with a chance to overtake the #1 WPA ranking to practice and/or bond for a team exhibition? Is this some type of joke?

It certainly has the feel of a joke. Shane's attainment of WPA #1 would, in my opinion, bring more glory and would do more to build the image of American pool than anything that could possibly happen at the Mosconi.

Similarly, if Shane needs a tuneup in the week before the Mosconi, what possible tuneup could be more appropriate than the Japan Open.

At a time when the quality of American pool played on the world scene has hit bottom, SVB is passing up a chance to be WPA #1?

While I certainly have no way of knowing, my suspicion is that SVB was steered or pressured by others into this very poor decision.

This is a bit like skipping Wimbledon or the US Open to prepare for the Davis Cup.

I have to agree AND disagree...

I have to agree with this. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I agree from a player's perspective that yes, it would be better to play in the all japan open than toodle around in preparation for the MC.

however, to say that the all japan open is more prestigious a win than the MC I think is wrong. Does it mean more??? Depends on the perspective. From a professional's perspective that is representing and getting paid for sponsoring a company, the MC is the most prestigious event period. It gets the most exposure and viewership of any pool event.

If you look at it from the skill to win it and what it means as a player, then the all japan open is a much bigger deal.

I think they're trying to get away from the each team player is more out for themselves attitude that has wracked the last few mosconi teams..

I think it's reprehensible that they (if they did) put Shane in a position that he would have to make a choice. Knowing that the all japan open was being played, staying behind shouldn't have even been brought up IMO.

And if Shane brought it up, it should've been immediately dismissed and what should've happened is that all parties involved should have immediately said, no Shane, we need you to go win it to help put the fear of you into our mosconi cup opponents.

That's my opinion anyways.

Of course you know he's matched up plenty, at least I hope you do.

But here is the point, it is real simple, which is better preparation, provides more opportunity for Shane and USA pool:

1. Competing in All Japan Championship with best players in the world, possibly winning and taking over #1 WPA world ranking? OR

2. Participating in some circle jerk in St Louis handing out high fives to teammates and possibly autographs for a few fans?

Got it?

Mr Expert

Don't use google.

Can you tell me who was the #1 ranked WPA player in 2011?

Can you tell me who won the Mosconi Cup in 2011?

I bet you and 97.4% of the public can answer #2 but not #1 correctly.

Now Mr. Expert

Tell me, without google, who won the Japan Open in 2011

lol @ people saying Shane should go just to get the #1 ranking. He and the rest of the pool playing world already knows he's the best player. Hell, he would give Niels a ball in 9 or 10 ball and horsef#$% him. FACT

Some people on AZ seem to want to speak for Shane, but just maybe all he wants to do is have a little fun? What would be wrong with that? Could it be that all the traveling Shane does can get to be a drag on him? Would burn out be good for Shane?

Seems to me hanging around with John Schmidt, Justin Bergman, Justin Hall and Corey Duel, on a friendly basis instead of in competition against them, might be kinda fun.

A person should be allowed to do what makes them happy not to please their critics. If this is Shane's choice so be it.

Let us all just enjoy what a talented pool player Shane is and wish all the MC members good luck in their future matches. I for one am looking forward to the upcoming Mosconi Cup, may the best (USA, USA) team win.
