How Would You Play This Layout?

You have to learn this shot because it comes up over and over in the beginning shot of a run or to get back in line. Shoot it with the object ball near the spot and the cueball midtable. Cueball spins off the middle of all 3 rails and comes to the middle of 4th rail...you cannot scratch. You just overcut the object ball and the collision induced throw and spin from using inside English bring the object ball to the hole. All it takes is practice and it's automatic.
True, the 3 rail with inside, played via follow, stun and even sometimes with a bit of draw (depending on the shot one plays to it), can be quite predictable and a great way to get back into line.

It's unusual to have so many replies and not have one person come close to what the player actually shot:D

Oh well, we've still got time:smile:

Don't think anyone has mentioned this option yet. Draw or draw with a touch of OE... depending on how slick the cloth is.

I wonder what else he could have done...

Bank the 1 ball short-rail, long-rail to around where the 8 is and have the cue ball slide down behind the 3 ball?

Looks like the 1 is not far enough up the table for this shot. I shifted it up table a couple of inches in the overhead to show this possible shot, reminiscent of this shot by Corey Deuel http://youtu.be/ZL3WvPwSDSQ?t=1m34s

Would be hard to stop the ball though imho, unless played more as a power stun draw... i.e. Not his quite as low as Corey hit his shot.

Power Bank with low center CB? Edited and added the soft draw bank option.

Unless your superman cape gets in the way of your stroke...

I wouldn't play it, but some guys like banks and if they think they can get the CB into the right corner, there's a chance of safety as the bank will likely finish at a distance if it misses.

Just trying to think of other possible offensive shots.

Right you are, and I agree about the new cloth. Would arc the CB too much and ruin the angle.

I mentioned it in post 6 as a joke. Its a well known trick shot called the circular draw. In the trick shot version, the cb pulls back to pocket a ball hanging in the pocket by the 7.
Too many "ifs" make it a low percentage shot to shoot, especially when position needs to be precise.

It's funny because the person who shoots this is either an absolute monster or a total sucker. More often than not the latter.

Another good thread, ONB.
....and there can be no wrong answers....it's about how we would play this.

No way I'm going three rails with that 3-ball sitting there.....
...how the rails hit and which side of the pocket you go in could result in hitting the 3.

If you tell us the guy miscued and gave up ball in hand....I'm gonna freak.

:)Would I do that?

Keith McCready shot the 1 in the upper right-hand corner and hit it hard with maybe a touch of left. The cueball slid off the first rail just a little and straightened out and then came down on the 2 ball.

Lovely shot! I thought the in and out behind the 3, to get that line looked too tight / risky.

Will try it out on the table to get a feel for it.

UPDATE: Have just attempted the shot about 40 times and made it only a few times. It is a psycho shot! At least how I had it set up.

All it takes is high follow, but the key is in the speed... you have to catch the side rail on almost the precise angle of arc. I'd say the margin for error is about 1 mph in stroke speed. A little slower and you get the grey line in my diagram, a little faster and you get the black line path.

Not sure if Keith is a genius or a madman... a bit of both perhaps :-) He's a joy to watch, that's for sure!

ONB, do you have a link to the video where Keith played that shot?

Would love to see how much thought he put into it and where he hit the side rail.
