Scooping With Jump Cue

I would love to see someone catch some of these players that scoop when jumping in slow motion video. You can watch at regular speed and see some players cue come down almost level with the table just before contact. To me it's like the phantom touch of 2nd base on the double play. As long as no one ever calls it, it will get worse and worse. I guess the refs don't say anything because there is no way to prove it after the shot. No replays in pool. Johnnyt
 
A bit confused. You actually saw someone get away with a scoop with a referee involved?

Even in league the player would get laughed out of the room.
 
If the shooter has his cue raised at a 45+degree angle, there's no way he can scoop the ball without hitting the table first, even then it would be more difficult than just executing a legal jump shot.

Are you referencing pro matches or league play?

I called this on a guy I was playing , it's more like a double hit they hit to low below center and then the ball rides up the cue just a bit before it goes forward I would love to see a slow mo of it but it happens more than people are aware of

I have seen many players hit below center to jump a ball. It can easily be a foul if the cue touchs the CB twice.
Jumping has never been legal in the 100 yrs before the 80's.
Its time to outlaw jumping and get back to real pool.

I have never seen scoping allow in league or tournament play, only guys shooting on a bar table more concerned about the drinks than actual pool.

A legal shot is pretty easy to see just from the angle of the cue and impact.

I'm pretty new to jumping, something I just started trying to do. I figured it would help with some of those safe shots I end up have to try and kick out of.

After you have hit enogh jump shots you'll be able to tell when you double hit it or scoop it it's almost impossible to catch it with the naked eye
 
Thank you all for your input. I say if you can't tell for sure with the naked eye, either ban jumping or get cameras. We know the promoters can't afford a good camera on each table and someone to run it, so get rid of jumping. Johnnyt
 
Nuts, something else to watch out for. I almost always use the Dart stroke no problems, but if super close to OB, or going for long jump can see it happening.
 
A guy on my league tries tobget away with this too. Claims that since his cue is elevated more then 45 deg, it can't be scooped. Bulls**t! Ita very easy to tell. It sounds like a miscue....not a solid thud.

I believe there is a rule in place already ,that states,,if a mis-cue during a jump shot,,it is a foul!!

Im a jumper. I can't believe that it is possible to scoop a ball with the cue at a 45 without being able to tell ,,with the eye,,or the very least,,,sound!! I believe it would be very obvious.
And nobody would be doing this on purpose. (not that anyone said they would be)

A well executed jump shot, feels smooth to the shooter and has a distinct sound.(again,,this does not help the situation much)
This is the first I have heard of a scoop (45) jump shot so I will be paying attention,but I have some strong doubts.

I can say this from experience. The people that don't jump,,and do not like jumping,,,REALLY do not like jumping!!!
 
Way too many arguments have broken out about this at the local bar I play at over the years, enough to make the owner post signs, NO JUMP SHOTS. This one older guy years ago, kept scooping, and we told him that was an illeagel jump shot, he would argue, but my tip never touched the felt, it just got old after a while, it's a shame for someone like me that knows how to properly jump, but in the end, it cuts down on the bullshit.

Right. Pool is supposed to be a two-dimensional sport. Jumping is a trick shot and belongs in artistic matches, not serious comoetition. I despise any sort of jumping - even with the playing cue - but I realize I am in a tiny minority who feels this way. At least, let's get rid of that disgusting ball stabber euphemistically called the "jump cue" and get on with the beauty of the kicking game.

I am in agreeance about getting rid of jump cues...they make it a little too easy. But seeing a well executed full cue jump is just about as pretty as a nice kick, to me at least.

That being said, who said pool is meant to be a two dimensional sport? There was a time when Straight Pool was widely considered the way pool was meant to be played. Things change.

I love the jump shot and the jump cue except for when someone in my league executes it against me..LOL. Seriously though I have been accused of this and I'm sorry, it hasn't happened. I have been jumping balls for a long time and do it fairly well. The only time that it's ever happened in practice is when the cue ball is very close to the ball that I am jumping. I have fouled then because I'm not good at the dart stroke but I also normally hit that ball anyway so it's a foul either way. I don't have it come up that often though.

I play in one league and some tourneys where jumping is allowed and I play in APA where it isn't. My argument for jumping is a fair one. If I'm giving up all these points or racks to a lower level player from the get go then I should be able to jump out of their crap misses that always seem to leave me hooked. The handicap has already been adjusted with the skill level so why can't I use ALL of my skills in order to win that match or try to win? One of those skills is jumping. Kicking I'm pretty good at but it's sometimes difficult or leaves your opponent with an open table even if you make a good hit. At least jumping gives you a good hit most every time(if you're good at it) and I am. I made two different jump shots where I called and pocketed the ball in a tourney last weekend. Those helped me to win the matches I was in...sold.
