A couple questions...

1: a ferrule made of the natural stuff on a standard maple shaft... Does it effect the cb deflection? IE: like a LD shaft, etc...

2: what about using a standard length natural stuff ferrule vs a 1/2" ferrule?

I understand everyone has likes n dislikes, ethics thoughts on the material, and durability thoughts. Looking strictly for hit characteristics.

I have a custom being made as we speak... Please help

Ivory is heavy and dense, Ivory is used in thicker sections (than modern plastics) when used as a ferrule, it definitely effects CB deflection by increasing it, substantially.

2: what about using a standard length natural stuff ferrule vs a 1/2" ferrule? The less Ivory the less deflection.

Ivory makes a great ferrule. When it's buffed and sealed it shines like no other and is
Completely resistant to chalk buildup. (Which is my favorite thing about them) deflection wise.....you will have an absolute increase in deflection.

I used LD for many years and transitioned back to a maple shaft with a melamine ferrule a couple of months ago. I'm playing close to my old speed before the switch, although it took a substantial amount of practice and adjustment.

That being said, when I try out friends' cues that have an ivory ferrule, I can't make a ball with spin. Maybe if I spent a bunch of time with it I would adjust, but the hit is unique and not particularly to my liking. Cues with ivory ferrules are prevalent; find someone that has one and ask them to try it before you jump for one.

I've bought quite a few top cues to play with....in the 70s they usually had ivory ferrules.
I had them ALL replaced.....they hit terrible, IMO.
Ivory is an old tradition that should've went away a long time ago.

There are a lot of great materials now that weren't available 100 years ago.

You should realize by now is everyone has different tastes and opinions regarding ivory ferrules.

I would suggest finding someone local that plays with them, and try them out. The only opinion that is going to matter in this is yours.

Uncapped, 5/8" ivory with larger diameter tenon and Kevlar tip pad is the absolute best there is right now IMO. I'm having a pair made now. The fronts of the shafts have been LDed. The joint end has plugged with heavier tone wood so my shafts aren't too light overall.

Well, you also did get the facts regarding deflection.

Hope you have enough info to make a decision.

One thing is for sure, ferrules are fairly easy to switch out if you want to try something new.

It deflects more than most common materials.

Not sure. Depends on the material you compare it with, I guess. I did try a rather short ivory ferrule that deflected a whole lot. Not sure if this was an anomaly or not. The full lengths ones all deflected more than I like.

My experiences with Ivory might be a bit more limited than some on here, but here they are for what they are worth: I thought the hit was horrible on all the cues I tried with Ivory ferrules. Together with the increased deflection that makes this a no-go for me. I tried a really nicely balanced cue with two shafts, that as far as I could tell were identical except for the ferrules. The plastic one hit fine, the other had a "clicky" hit. Hard to describe it more accurately. The hit was hard, but not in a good way. You asked specifically to leave the ethics out, so I will.
