Even though I knew who was on the team the year before last(USA's worst showing ever) I went anyway and it was fabulous. I really enjoyed myself thanks to sjm and a few other AZers and friends. Even though it comes at a bad time of year for me to leave work I am strongly considering it again this coming year.

It was a blast!

I totally understand how you feel. I can get why a certain section of the community would feel this way too. Here is what you have to remember when you have those concerns about who is on the team.

The Mosconi Cup is the closest thing the pool world has to the World Cup, Wimbledon Tennis, The Superbowl, The World Series, The Ryder Cup, The Stanley Cup. The Fans of those sports buy their tickets sometimes a couple of years in advance. People pay a premium to attend the finals on the center court at Wimbledon not knowing who will even be playing. I don't see that there is any difference here. JMO of course.

Lou, I respect your opinion. However the Tropicana has been renovated. I agree its not the Ballagio, or the MGM but its not at the motel 6 either. From what I have seen the place is pretty good and helps the little people like me be able to afford to go. If it were at the Bellagio at $250 per night it would probably take a bunch of us out of the trip. The trip is already expensive for a couple to attend when you count in ALL expenses. If you want to stay at the Luxor or somewhere that suits your lifestyle better that the Trop then its just across the street Stay there and travel over each day to the Trop for the event. I just don't see this as a negative I see it as being a more affordable venue.

yea, i know. i blame it on the rowdy Brits - Vegas sent them to the end of the strip! at least it's next to the liquor store & airport. and we've still got the Rodeo cowboys @ closeby MGM to kick their unruly English arses....

as for costs, Mark, Mirage was $56. MGM is $50. Luxor & Disneyland & NYNY are $33. i'm guessing Tropicana will be $25ish?

Lou, we'll be across the street @ Mandalay, if yáll want to join us & split a $5 cab ride & drink in Red Square from the frozen vodka bar.

and no, we won't make a decision till we know who is on the US Team - which apparently will be <30 days out. if rates are too high at that time, then we simply won't go. they don't sell out of Mosconi tickets in the US, so no worries for you!

What am I... chopped liver?:p

Jim Honey, you're a given!
i will say, that being @ the Tropicana makes it closer to Best Billiards for another AZB throw-down!
(the OP is included, too)

This time I will have a mini cue for you:)

I hope you like pink ivory.

It'll be Messrs. A, B, C, D, and SVB. Isn't that enough info on which to make a decision?

[Would any one person's presence on the team keep you away (no need to actually name that person)?]

Hell, you don't know who'll be on the Ryder cup team when the tickets go on sale, who gives a crap, go and support your continent / country.

Seems to be problems with the Tropicana webiste buying the tickets though, my mate was trying to get them last night for 5 of us, and still has no confirmation, or response from his query about what is happening with his order. Amateur hour!

Where do you get these rates? The lowest I can find for the Luxor is $72/night fees and taxes included. The Tropicana is more like $100.

i don't know how to embed my email ads from the MGM properties & MLife into here, but i get them now daily (not weekly). it's usually a 3 night minimum, plus txs & that daily fee, and $100 playing chips & $100 room service credit & $100 restaurant credit.

it's always cheaper to call the front desk direct or just walk in; cheaper than Expedia, Travelocity, etc; don't tell them you're coming in for an event; tell them you're coming back from 2 mos ago to gamble & your friend recommended them @ $__ rate.... these rates have pretty much been the standard for the past 5 years. none of my furniture people have ever stayed at Tropicana in the past 10yrs, so i can't speak of them - that $25 was a guess, comparing it to Strat, Riviera, Sahara. if they pull $100/night, i'm telling all of my people & it'll be the running joke of my Show next month!

i would think that MatchRoom would have negotiated special rates for everyone? i did it w/ Mirage for 2013 & got $56, but by late OCT that was the going rate so it wasn't any special deal. Palms is around the corner, too. for the value, i'd stay at Luxor or MGM. Luxor ($33) has a really good steakhouse & Starbucks. MGM ($50ish) has tons of fabulous restaurants, plus green tigers & you can walk across the side street.

and yes, Bob - your attendance is mandatory @ Best Billiards. i want to see those trick shots! :happydance:

With MLife, I paid 42 a night at the Mirage in 2013..... Last week, I paid 47.

Trop will cost around 60ish, they are not part of MLife....

I would suggest any first timers, to stay somewhere on the East side of the Strip, that way you can jump the Monorail for 12 bucks all day.

Anyone have a link for the tickets...? Ticketmaster doesn't show them for sale yet. Are they out too.?

Mark, I respect your opinion too. Yes, it's been renovated but you know what they say about lipstick on a pig.

I don't think anyone expects the Bellagio, or the Mandarin, Wynn, Aria, or similar. The MC has been held at the MGM and last time in the US at The Mirage -- nice properties with decent common areas, casino, bars, and restaurants -- and very affordable rooms. The Tropicana is a serious step in the wrong direction and definitely a negative.
