Letter designation rating systems are too subjective. A+,A, B,C+ etc. Are you a Master, Advanced, Intermediate, Novice, or Beginner? Be honest!

Giving each letter a different label doesn't change anything. Everyone is going to have different opinions as to what each of those levels mean, regardless of what you call them.

I put Novice. I somewhat know what I'm doing but still have a lot to learn. I'm proficient at shooting but not good enough to instruct others unless it's pointing out basic flaws that true beginners are making such as not holding their cue level or something simple.

So I'm finding out. I am tired of people saying they are B players and cannot make a decent bridge and can't run three balls. It all comes down to putting up the cheese and playing doesn't it? So far in the poll 4 out of ten are advanced players. Finding this difficult to believe.

I put beginner because i love to make mistakes and get out of line and also love to miss the money ball when it counts. if i could only get out of my own way hahahaha. one day i will look back and laugh.

IMHO the APA 7 (in 8 ball) have the largest variation of skill of all the levels.

Some 7's are C's others have pro ability but are just not known guys.

Dave, you are absolutely right. I understand your point. I don't and won't play APA for various reasons. However I have been told by APA players that I'd be an APA SL7. I still call myself a C player or intermediate. I guess it comes down to cash on the line when playing sets then. Just trying to find some sort of rating system without the woofing. One guy rated himself a Master. I guess he plays in an open format against pros without handicap. See what I mean?

Hah, hang the 9, very tongue in cheek. I don't think he got it!

Well everyone knows Fast Eddie is a born loser, although I was hoping to avoid being that obvious LOL. I figured if you quote part of a movie when talking about skill, you'd see another.

But he is part winner too when playing 3C.

Score yourself at Hopkins's Cue Skill and your rating speaks volumes for your true ability.

The Hopkins Cue Skill test is a little easy, yes??
I don't think its a great determinate of skill level..

Maybe if it was changed to "run all the balls in order" or something, but certainly not shoot any ball.....

The last 5 are run in order. What's your average score with 10 frames? Have anything on video? I think it's very accurate.

Isn't it enough when I admit that I suck at pool? Do I really need a rating system?

Even this is totally subjective.
I goofed off with my rating in this thing but I would consider myself Advanced by these ratings. That said, I see a couple of names in the Advanced category that could completey squash me in an even race...see branpureza.

I've always wondered why people get so hung up on ratings. The easiest way to see where you fit in is to just play and let the chips fall where they may.

Koop - C+ / B- according to my definition

I'm sure I could do the drill every time... even on a Diamond Pro-cut..
(I would wager on it if that's your next question) :)

With the exception of breaking and getting kissed in the side or something, I don't see how an average good player could not score 12-14 every rack. Maybe I think some people play better than they do.. I may ask a couple guys tonight if they want to give it a go and see how they do in a couple racks.

All I'm saying is I think the ranking for the drill is off..
I think the test should be done shooting all the balls in order.. Then that would give a pretty good ranking when done over a period of time.
