I know nothing about wood. I hear in the forums about a few cue makers who are incredibly picky in the wood they will use, to the point of not making many sticks because they don't find any unique wood.

Is there wood somewhere that you'd personally love to make a playable stick out of, not just for show, has to be a player.

Is there a type of wood you can't afford, or one that isn't even for sale because there just isn't enough of it?

I could easily make a general statement that I favor woods in the red spectrum such as Bois de Rose, Padauk, and Purpleheart, as well as BEM and Ebony, but in reality it is the overall design and execution of that design in conjunction with the type of wood that is most important.

Simple woods in a flowing original design will always trump exotic woods in a poor design.

With the small amount of wood used to build any cue up to and including a merry widow, there is no wood that can be too expensive.
 
I think I know what maple is, have a tree outside like that. However lake salvaged, (I'm guessing a lake and salvage are involved?) No idea what a dowel is.

Any woods that you just can't find anywhere that you'd love to be able to have?

The holy grail in musical instruments is Brazilian Rosewood. The one with yellowish and orange streaks.

Finding them in straight grain is a great adventure these days.
They have the perfect tone and density to me . AND looks great .
There are several woods that are getting really tough to find.
Curly koa, figured ironwood, ironwood burl ( and a lot of other burls ) , sappelle, figured cocobolo, pernambuco and so on.
 
Here is one that I don't see very often, the place that sells the wood is Kamuela Hard Woods over here on the Big Island, they have more Koa then you can shake a stick at also. Pun intended. They are hard to get ahold of and you got to make an appointment to see the woods, but they have some of the best from the Islands.

I simply haven't put it into process yet, but the tonality of it is pretty amazing, so I'm looking forward to doing so.

Cochen rosewood, AKA Siam rose, Siamese rose, Thai rose, bloodwood, etc. It's as good as cue wood can be, as well as aesthetically attractive, but dang near impossible to get.
 
Not a cuemaker here but I agree Siam Rosewood is really beautiful. 2nd from the right cue in the picture. I saw the cue in person while I was in their cue factory few months ago. That one really stand out but too bad it belonged to someone already.

Is it like Narra ( Borneo rosewood ) ?
 
Not sure Joey. Was only told by the maker its Siam Rosewood. Hopefully Eric can recognise if it is or not. I once asked if he had snakewood and he sent me this photo lol. Underneath the snooker table he hides alot of his nicer black white ebony.

Nothing like narra. I'll see if I can dig up some pics, or maybe take a couple pics of some pieces I have. Bar none my favorite cue wood. Kamphi is pretty much the same in every respect except for aesthetics. The cochen is much prettier, and much rarer. Kamphi is pumkin orange & usually bland. I have some with figure & good striping but I have a bunch that's just fugly. Cochen (Siam) is red/orange & burgundy with erratic black striping. Both woods are tonally perfect for cues, IMO.
