first of all, thanks everyone for the funny commentary plus macguy for the historic pics with Gus and you, too, Ken, for showing us your great sticks. I'm glad I started this thread just for all the wonderful pics.
As for pics of the one I shot with, I expected to see the owner, DeRon last night but he was a no-show for our big practice session.
Will def try again next Wed.

This past Wed night I was playing in a competitive practice session with about 20 guys.
Afterward, one of the guys (a friend) comes over to me and starts taking the lid off of a brown centennial case, saying "I have something to show you"..
He pulls out a 1984 Gus true hoppe bumperless 4 pointer with linen wrap.
Ivory sleeve and points with blue veneers. :thumbup::thumbup:
He said Barry brought it to him at SBE and even gave him the build sheet from Gus' book for this cue.
He let me hit some balls with it and it was one of the best hitting cues ever. The cue pinged like a banshee with brilliant feedback. I loved it!
It doesn't always go this way with hitting old masters cues. Often, it's more about the collectibility than the hit. This one had both!!
Just wanted to share a great moment.

In the sixties and the seventies, that's pretty much all they talked about was ''the hit'' or the feel of the cue during execution. Only other item were the cue tips themselves, was not easy finding or having that connection to getting good leather back then. When a good tip came off, the player usually went to the floor to find it. Varner hated to remove a tip if it played well, even if it was micrometers from the backing.
While I am not one of them, I know lots of guys that have Moori or Kamui tips put on, and then has the repair guy take 1/2 of it off.
I admit the second half does play better, but I never remove it immediately after I put it on.

The one on top brings back some memories, good and bad.
I owned Joey Spaeth's Gus...it had light blue and green on the points
and collars...and the ring on the after-wrap was at the bottom of the
wrap...and it had Cortland wrap...otherwise looked the same.
I could draw farther with that cue than any other cue I've owned.....
( for you 'arrow vs Indian guys'....it's BOTH )
Some kids broke into my truck in '95, they didn't know cues, they left
7 new Josses but took a bunch of sneakies....the Szamboti was in a
six-packer....so they took the case. :angry:
It was a small financial loss ( long story ) but what hurts is that it was
going back to the family when I got too old to use it...Joey's grandson
was getting it.
I am glad there are others out there that hear/feel that type of cue feedback. If you mention the "ping" to most people their eyes go foggy like they do not understand what you are talking about.
I bought a used D19 McDermott and had it refinished buy McDermott, don't under estimate how well they can restore a used up cue, they did a fantastic job. Anyway, the nice little bonus here was how nice the cue hits, although it was not my intention it has become my player just because of the nice hit. I also have an old Hoppe/Titlist. When I put my Predator shaft on that one it almost rings like a golf driver, that one is bumper-less. I love the feedback of that cue but I am afraid to have it refinished or anything for fear of changing the hit/feedback.

I have been getting my MBA at the age of 51 so I haven't played much pool at all the last couple years. I graduate Sunday, and frankly I am pretty proud of myself. I am the second oldest in the class and finished the MBA with a 3.80 GPA.
I always go to DCC, and if you see me and want to hit some with any of my cues, I always let my AZ brothers try them out.

If you've ever hit, or if you ever get a chance to hit a ball with an old Chicago made Laube cue, it stands alone in the ''sound'' dept.
There is a name you don't hear much. I met him at the US Open years ago in Chicago. I caught him taking my picture and went over to see what he was about. I asked him" I'm no body why are you taking my picture"? He said I looked interesting.
He was some kind of photographer or something. Once we got talking about cues though that was it. We talked off and on for the whole week.
Congratulations on your degree, you should be extremely proud of yourself!!!!! I always like it when people say "I cant go to school at my age, do you know how old I will be in 5 years?" My guess is the same age as if you did not go to school.
That's also a very generous offer about your cues, I may have to go to the DCC sometime soon. Sounds like I am the only one here who never went.

No, they were for sale...I sold a lot of Josses in the 90s.
Go once and you will be hooked and will continue to go each year like the rest of us.
