Fair enough, so let's say that Darren's oversleeping potentially cost himself and others a decent sized chunk of dough. But, I'm not sure that really changes anything. Suppose you and I flip coins and I win by using a 1 sided coin. I guess you can't say I cheated you out of anything.....after all, you were 50% likely to lose anyway.

I find myself in an unusual place with this thread.
I typically don't think that the pro players, as a group, do themselves many favors. As a group, they have the opportunity to create a fan base and an entertainment product that would help them tremendously, but often they don't seem to do that.
In this situation, I find myself on the other side of the fence. I know Darren personally, and have a tremendous amount of respect for him. He is respectful and holds himself to a high standard. I believe that no one feels worse about this mistake than him. But, he is human and did make a mistake. He has to carry that burden, and I'm sure he will do so with character and respect because that's the kind of man that he is.
I understand you're being upset about the mistake he made, and rightfully so. You risked a lot of money on Darren and he let you down.
I was glad to see that Darren came on this forum, a place he doesn't frequent, and apologized to you personally.
This whole issue has gotten out of control. It has now reached the point where Darren's mistake is being compared to stealing.
Surely you realize that what Darren did was a mistake. He didn't do it on purpose.
Also, surely you realize that betting on a coin toss with the outcome predetermined by deceit is stealing.
I feel for you, I really do. That was a lot of money to lose.
I also understand what Calcutta's do for events like this. I like calcutta's, as they bring a completely different layer to the whole thing.
I also know that pretty much every pro that I've talked to about calcuttas have the same opinion of them. They usually try to avoid them. They don't feel the odds on the money are good for them. They are frowned on if they don't buy half. They are accused of dumping if they don't win, etc. I've personally seen events where one player went so high that they had to win the event just to break even. It was a bad bet!
Here's a question for you. How many of the calcutta winners had money on themselves in the calcutta? I'm not talking about their backers either. I mean there own money.
My fear of this whole situation is that it will lead to fewer events drawing players like Darren out to play in them. And that would be a bad thing for pool. It would hurt the room owner. It would hurt BigTruck who streams the events. It would hurt the spectators who spend their money enjoying pool.
