Richard Black cues

Quick question, can anyone confirm if he is still making his cues or has someone else taken over his duties? I heard through the grapevine someone spending 3k+ on a buska tribute and there were issues with the wrap seam, shaft tapers/weights and the tip install had glue residue stuck to the ferrule on one shaft. I'm considering a custom and he was a cue maker I had hoped to do business with

Sounds about right coming from him.

Mr. Black Is Stll Active

Check with Bill Grassley at Cornerstone Cues who is pals with Mr. Black. I read that same thread and was amazed and perplexed by what I read. That's uncharacteristic of Richard Black and so I'd give Bill a call and do a reference check with him.

I spoke with him in November and he is still making cues.

Is there anyone helping or apprenticing? There's no way I can even consider spending that kind of dough if anyone but him is machining each and every part.
I guess a southwest is an option for that price

A few years ago a friend had a cue made by him. When he recieved it the weight was not what he requested. He called Richard about it and Richard asked if it felt right? My friend said yeah but that he likes a lighter cue. Richard said then don't worry about it, weight doesn't mean anything.

Richard may sometimes appear to be a little difficult to deal with but I think he knows how to make a great cue. Problem is when you want it a certain way he may not do it if it affects his idea of how it should be.

You're very, VERY wrong. It's not at all uncharacteristic of Bill. He's a genius when it come to design. But his execution has been just a bit off on a NUMBER of occasions.

Go check out his site and zoom in on some of his fancier cues. They're amazing looking... but there are flaws. Always have been.

As far as I know he is still making cues.
I have several of his cues and find them the finest cues made......period!
Yes I have tried most of the other top cues and, whatever he does, his cues just fit me perfectly.
Just make sure you use his shaft and tip too.
No LD's on cues of that quality.
Let the maker's ideas and experience come through.

I have 3 of his cues and they're the worst inlays I have EVER seen! One cue plays great and the other 2 play like crap. Doesn't matter if I switch shafts between them, they still play bad.

Richard made fantastic cues through his rich cue making experience!

I Know where a used Richard black cue is for sale , it needs new shafts.
I called Richard around the first of this year and he said he would make new shafts for the cue.
MM me if you are interested .

The man who owns it also owns a pawn shop , his name is Gary and you can tell him I told you about it..

You criteria is clear. The thing is.... with South West, how do you know who is machining each and every part of your SW cue?

very true indeed, but, when i was in the market for a Richard Black cue it was because i was under the impression that he indeed did make the cues himself from start to finish.

Southwest is a brand with no particular cuemaker being identified, to my knowledge atleast and would be ok with that given their reputation.

The Southwest cues I've owned have very much been a hit or miss.
Some are great others are not good.

I'd take any Richard Black any way over any of the Southwest I have played or owned.

In my opinion he makes the best cues out there.
But that's just me and my stroke. It's the best match I have found.

I thought that too....before I learned to play :)

Worst inlays EVER!!!

I play a pretty decent game.
Can break and run several times in a row.
But what do inlays have to do with learning to play pool?

I have several RB's, started buying them in the 80's, and each and ever one of them has inlays that are simply unmatched by any one.
They are a true perfection.

Maybe you have a fake RB. There are a lot of fake RBs out there.
And I mean A LOT!

I got all my RB's directly from him.

I have bought and sold several Richard Black Cues through the years and all were nice cues. I still have the nicest one in my collection. I could find flaws with almost anyone's cues it I put on magnification and looked hard enough. Richard made a statement many years ago and I agree with it. He basically said a cue is to be admired from arms length and not looked over with a microscope.
