Chris Mellings thoughts on SVB

Your parochial attitudes always make me laugh.

Who is the best pool player? (Not english pool. Not chinese pool. Not that other game. Not the one shane can't play. Nor that one. Or that one).

That one! That's the one he's best at!

How bout American pool period. Chris can't win at anything played in the states........
But you already knew that

I was watching the World Pool Masters match between Melling and SVB. Before the match both players are getting interviewed. I found what Chris Melling says kind of a insulting. But it made me wonder, do most Europeans feel the same way towards SVB? Listen to what he says right around the 3 minute mark.

Chris also says beforehand that Shane is obviously one of the best players in the world, so no, he's not insulting Shane. Chris is just trying to psych himself up to play someone he knows is almost impossible to beat, got to try and find some silver lining in your mind to hope against hope. But Shane goes on to defeat him easily and Chris' body language in the chair is one of defeat almost immediately when he sees Shane brought his A game with him that day.

From a pure "cueist" perspective I think there is strong support to put them both high on the list. SVB has absolutely dominated American pool but Chris has proven to be very strong on American tables in rotation pool and 8-ball (the two major non-niche games played) and has shown greater adaptation to different pocket sizes and cuts. People on here when supporting players always like to pull the "what about all around!" card. I do not really agree with it, but if you consider it viable than Chris being as strong as he is in such a vast array of cue sports should tell you he has some skills there that should not be discounted.

You are talking about a guy who won major international pool events, and then went and qualified for the pro snooker tour... He can play some. I do not think he is top tier with SVB, Orcullo and Ko, but he is right there at the top of that next tier when he is actually putting some focus into pool and noone in the world thinks drawing Chris is a bye, including SVB. It is not too far off a coin flip in tournament conditions.

I'd have to agree. Very good assessment

Everyone who follows or plays pro pool knows Shane plays world class pool after the break.
Regardless of 8, 9 or 10-ball (his 1-pocket isn't too shabby either).

But, there have been quite a few instances where top pro's have spoken out about Shane's racking.
Alex has, Earl has, Niels has, Dennis has and Chris does it here to. So quite a few people I imagine,
myself included, think there is probably something to it.

Chris' win-loss record against Shane when a ref is racking seem to point to it aswell.

I really enjoy watching Chris Melling shoot. His stroke is so smooth, it's enjoyable to watch him play.

Shane on the other hand is a champion of grand proportion with all of the skills packaged together with a will that is difficult to bend let alone break.

That being said, I see and hear many pool players making far worse, but disparaging remarks nevertheless about their opponents. Almost always, but at least eventually, the knocker usually has to eat his own words. :D

If you found that insulting I have to wonder which pool halls you have been in. He said Van Boening is one of the best in the world.

Its fantasy..,

What does Earl and the rest of them say he is doing when racking? Johnnyt

Its FANTASY!!!! There nothing going on with the rack!! They are all jealous because they cant break like him, that all there is to it!

I think what Chris needs to do is tell Shane, let's play some 10 ball, neutral racker and we will both put up our own $50,000, race to 50, or 20 ahead.

Now that's what he needs to do if he really thinks he is the better player. And if he has some supporters, he can probably get another $100,000 on the rail.

Now , then you could say he wasn't taking out of his ass.

It is rather similar to great racing drivers being jealous of shit drivers who win races solely because they have better cars.

I'd be pissed if i were melling. Quite clearly the better cueist of the two yet cannot win because he is a purist; a boxer rather than a slugger.

One more thing: i would love to hear all the girly crying if the boot were on the oher foot. I shudder to think what the reaction would be if a chinese player, say, won everything because he had a monster break.

Geeze...

Lets talk about human nature. We play, we loose, and we have excuses as to why we lost. Some blame it on the rack, some on the rolls, and some on luck.

I really grow weary of it all. Even a mid level player like me can see Shane has one of the best rotation breaks of all the pros. Heck, he admits to that.

I loose because my opponent out played me. If I can't admit that then some thing is wrong with me. The last thing I want to do is come up with excuses for loosing.

Good idea. Now, to make it fair and not just a xenophobic myopic soggy biscuit circle jerk, they could play english 8 ball. Then, to really prove the best pool player, the decider could be chinese 8 ball.

$50 large? Your boy will not put a single dime on that.

Well, Melling was talking about nine ball wasn't he. I didn't watch the quote. SVB would post so fast Melling would barely get the words out of his mouth. There is no doubt in my mind, Melling wants NO part of SVB playing ten ball, or nine ball. Not betting his own money.NO Freaking way, he doesn't have the gamble...just a lot of mouth.

This is what old school was, play until one guy goes broke or quits. If Melling made an offer to play 10 ball or nine ball , Shane would say flip it.

Both need to bet their own.
