I just analog-to-digital converted and Youtubed my VHS recording of the semi and final matches that were broadcast 20 years ago. Video length is 2 hours, 13 mins.

These matches are from the 1995 9-Ball championship held during the Owensboro, Kentucky Pro Tour stop. You’ll see a semifinal + the superb final.

The matches feature Efren Reyes, Steve Mizerak at age 51, and Kim Davenport. Excellent commentary by Nick Varner and Buddy Hall. Owensboro is Nick’s hometown and he was instrumental in having the tour event held there and having an appropriate site made available.

The mini-interview with Efren, assisted by his partially English-speaking team mate, is interesting and at a point in time before he became a bit more fluent in the language in later years.

Semi:….Reyes-Mizerak
Final:….Reyes-Davenport…Start time -- 1:06:09

You’ll hear plenty of references to Davenport’s unbelievable comeback against Archer in the previous semifinal of this same tournament; I Youtubed it a couple weeks ago if you wish to view, (or re-view) it here:

Enjoy.

I knew from reading Jay Helfert's most recent book that Mizerak got really overweight, but man did that video show proof!

Great videos

Thanks

I remember these matches very well.
I taped them on when they were shown on Prime Ticket .
Efren sure put on a show against the Miz.
Efren used his famous $15 LONG and heavy stick on these matches.
It made a funny sound whenever he drew the ball.

35:40 shows how perfectionist Efren was on cue ball position back in those days .
Video shows how great Kim's stroke and fundamentals were.

i've heard this before, but how many times was efren a runner up in the US Open? 5 or 6 times? Is that true?

4 times.
He won it the first time he was in the finals ( 1994 against Varner ).
Lost to Pierce, Morris and Strickland after that .

JoeyInCali,
One thing I've taken away from all of these old videos Arnaldo has been so kind to post is that the fundamentals of these great players were nowhere near as rock solid as I remembered.

Davenport was all over the place with his fundamentals. He would jump up on shots, use body English, and even do some decision making while already down over the ball.

I thought Sigel had about the best fundamentals of any pool player and watching these old videos shows that he was less than perfect too.

Today's players are much more fundamentally sound than the previous generation. I guess that's the way it goes.

Memory Lane!

Sir,

This and the Davenport/ Archer match were the first matches I watched when I first started to get into pool seriously. I had part of the Kim/Johnny match on an old VHS and never recorded the others. In VA, you needed a Satellite dish to get Prime and it wasn't always on when I could watch it.
Thank you for taking me back to why I love this sport!

I've gotten plenty of PMs along the same lines, JMD. Makes the efforts all worthwhile (plus the personal bonus of getting to scrutinize every minute of all the great matches as I'm capturing the VHS content during the digitizing process).

So, thanks for all the "thank you"s. Keeps me motivated to digitize (and Youtube) all I've got.

Thanks for uploading this.

I noticed that you only have left channel audio, no big deal but likely something you can easily fix when digitizing. Also the audio drifted in the second match.

Just a couple observations, didn't detract from enjoying a couple really fine matches by some great players!

Thanks again.

I'm blowing up my data plan on my phone and I don't even care. LOL

More, more, more!!! :)
TXPoolnut,

Here's my Youtube channel where you'll find 28 matches as of the moment, some of which you may not be aware of:

Regarding the just previous poster's mention of the missing right audio, I did notice (soon after I Youtubed the completed video file referenced in this thread) that the right audio plug on my analog- to-digital converter had become loose somehow amidst my maze of wires during the process, thus losing the dual dimension of the original sound. I'm glad that this is the only one of my tournament uploads that was affected (to my knowledge). I've secured the RCA plugs in manner that will prevent this on future uploads.

My 80-year-old ears (and eyes) likely need a caffeine boost to enhance their acuity especially when -- as a precaution -- I've got a big, somewhat loud fan trained on my computer to ensure coolness during the long capturing/editing/uploading processes. About 7 hours of PC use goes into most of the sessions of multi-match processing from VHS-to fully edited video file-to Youtube upload.

No complaints on my end because I love re-visiting and sharing all the VHS-ed pool that I've saved for years. Kind of preserving some of our sport's history and excitement.
