Feds "Crushing" 1 Ton of Confiscated Ivory in Times Square

I'm not an animal activist by any means. Do we. Really need to use ivory in cues?

It is an easy material to work with and commands a ridiculous price. Ivory inlaid cues are kind of a con.

Ferrules and joints are a different thing, Some believe it plays better so they may want it.

See, and I don't think ivory is any harder or easier to work with than most materials. I think ivory ferrules play like garbage. Never like the looks of it, and from a morale stand point, wont own cues with ivory in them.

Yeah I'm not fan of ivory ferrules either. I don't like excessive inlay designs either. lots of other materials can be used for inlays.

Since this is not a balanced article it is difficult to judge whether the information contained in it is accurate.

This is a worn-out subject. There is unquestionably no harm in the use of pre-ban ivory and there is a good argument to be made for using ivory harvested from dead elephants or from elephants killed to protect villages and crops.

That's typical of the government... they can't do anything RIGHT.

Maybe the ivory would be do more good, by displaying it in Museums, alongside some gruesome pictures of elephants being slaughtered for their tusks.

Maybe a CLEAR message would do more good in the long run, instead of some side show.

Another good idea would be changing the penalty from slapping the hand to the DEATH PENALTY for poachers of any kind.

Well, they figured out a way to stop using them in billiard balls, and the alternative was WAY much better than ivory. And yes, I'm an animal activist if the meaning of it means I support organizations like ASPCA. (www.aspca.org)

I'm sure there are many dogs and cat lovers here. This organization helps them too. Small price to pay to have some good karma, and help some animals world wide end abuse, torture and neglect ;) Anyone on AZB that donates any amount gets a FREE box of Magic Chalk, including the shipping :happydance::woot:

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world. Our organization was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866 on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans, and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a strong local presence, and with programs that extend our anti-cruelty mission across the country, we are recognized as a national animal welfare organization. We are a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, and proud to boast more than 1 million supporters across the country.

What We Do

As the first humane organization to be granted legal authority to investigate and make arrests for crimes against animals, we are wholly dedicated to fulfilling the ASPCA mission through nonviolent approaches. Our organization provides local and national leadership in three key areas: caring for pet parents and pets, providing positive outcomes for at-risk animals and serving victims of animal cruelty. For more on our work in each of these areas, please visit our programs and services page.

History

Incorporated in 1866 by a special act of the New York State legislature, the ASPCA has a history rich in challenges and victories—from providing care and protection for the city's working horses and transforming dog pounds into professionally run adoptions facilities to founding an animal hospital that is still running today. Read more about our history.

Mission

The ASPCA's mission, as stated by Henry Bergh in 1866, is "to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States."

Why don't they just sell the ivory and then put that money towards funding the elephants that are still alive? It doesn't make sense. It's a total waste of revenue that they could be using and getting control over the killings of future elephants.

There you go interjecting common sense. This is gov't you're talking about. :)

Compared to something like MOP or Abalone or even some woods that if you do inlay with them you can get dust from other adjoining wood messing up the work. You can blend an ivory inlay so easy it is a pleasure to work with.

Not to mention the amount required to do inlays has almost no value really, compared to the amount the cue maker can ask because he has the magic word "Ivory" attached like it is priceless.

It's for the suckers who want to say they have an ivory inlaid cue, as the cue maker laughs all the way to the bank.

It would perpetuates the market and demand. The immorality of doing that is quite obvious. Who would they sell it to?

I donate $60.00 a month to ASPCA. I don't need or want a pat on the back for something I do out of love for animals. I wish I could do more.

One thing I do not like about ASPCA, the director takes too much money home for himself.

My wife goes to the local county shelter and sponsors animals. Not a lot, but the ones that look like they have a chance. She pays all the fees and a sign is put on the cage "Sponsored".

The people still have to jump through all the hoops to get the animal but it buys a dog like a month that may have been put down in a few days.

We have nothing to do with the "No kill" shelters. Unfortunately you can't find a home for every animal. From what we have seen they may end up living their lives in a cage, many not very healthy as the place collects money from some grant they have gotten.

We have seen some No Kills shelters that were practically criminal the way they operated. Many of these animals do need to be put down, that is just a fact.

No one would even know if you had ivory in your cue. Unless you told them.

I'm with you, I hate to see elephants become extinct for no reason. I no cues are not the only reason Ivory is used. I do wish the pool community would boycott it. I would love to have my children (8 months and 6 yrs) have elephants around when they are older. And to say to only use out from previously acquired or elephants that die naturally is a joke.
