Feds "Crushing" 1 Ton of Confiscated Ivory in Times Square

The only way to save the elephants is to pay people to hunt down and kill the poachers.

There are Rangers over there that do that on a daily basis. They get paid extra when this happens too. Seems like a good incentive to kill a poacher huh?

The animal organization mentioned does not support legal hunting in any form! Iam a hunter and iam an animal lover as much as anyone else.

I will promise you I have donated more to the preservation and protection of animals than virtually anyone on this page. Hunters dollars provide millions the world over. If not for hunters dollars wildlife around the world would be virtually gone. That is a fact!!

Crushing ivory is not the answer they have burned it is south Africa for decades and it has had no effect.

Now all you so called animal lovers stop eating meat someone else killed for you send me your leather cue cases and cut those leather tips off of all your cues. No disrespect intended! Let's just get the facts straight.

Oh and have any of you been to Africa the population in areas they are protected and hunted legally have huge populations. Trust me been there seen it and have friends there who deal with it on a daily basis.

It's always very telling how the "animal lovers" seem to have no scrouples about killing fellow humans, even poor and desperate ones...We are animals too, you know. Some of these cretins are psychopaths and people with various personality disorders. The rest are just too lacking in imagination or empathy, and have not had the experience of watching someone die a violent death before their eyes. They may also be to immature to understand the consequences of their "policies". You speak far too lightly of killing, like a kid watching action movies..

It's sad to see such a majestic, smart and unique animal as the elephant driven to extinction because of Asian demand for knick-knacs and western demand for pool cues and other objects like musical instruments. It doesn't matter if the ivory used is old, the demand created by it's use will lead to more killed animals today. There is just a delay on its useage. Just imagine a guy with a warehouse full of ivory with each batch marked "ready in 20 years, 19 years, 18 years..". Each time you buy something he will refill...

The worst thing about it is the complete uselessness and tastelessness of the products. Tacky crap to put on the bookshelf and inlays in pool cues which can't even be recognized as ivory without a loupe! Gaudy cue designs as well..How stupid is that! It's almost as bad as the people having gorilla hand ashtrays...Do we seriously have to explain to the next generation that we wiped the elephants out for this crap!?

There are substitutes for both joints and ferrules that are actually better than the "real thing", but hey, at least you can brag to your APA buddies about your fantastic all Ivory cue. They'll be real impressed when you slam that ball into the rail because of the huge deflection, I bet. The majority of this forum would gladly have the entire Elephant population of Africa and Asia go extinct as well as the have the Amazon rainforest destroyed in an instant if they could have a sixpack of beer today, is the impression I get. Then they'd have both God awful cues and beer for league night..The remaining 10 percent would organize safaris to hunt poachers for sport. There are simply no reasonable people at all left in the world.

I'm not an animal activist by any means. Do we. Really need to use ivory in cues?

Nope. IMO it comes down to people wanting what they want, and what they consider to be good, or valuable or important (or whatever desirable sounding adjective you want to substitute). Ivory inlays dont add anything to the cue but higher material costs and perceived value based on the scarcity of the product. Same thing with exotic skins for cue cases, shoes, briefcases or what have you. The exotic leather is no better or worse than cowhide, however because of the limited supply and perceived value of the material, some people just "have to have" exotic skins because they feel its better in some way. Make something hard to get, and some people want it. Sometimes without knowing why other than its rare and somebody else has it.

I dont know when it started, but I think a lot of it comes down to coveting what someone else has. Im guessing it goes back to the cave man days where one cave man told the other his loin cloth was better than his friends because its made from "x" hide as opposed to "z" hide. ;)

People will meander and beat this one to death....Sean summarized poignantly and straight to the point........cue-makers do not buy poached, illegal ivory......they are not getting the ivory at fleas markets where all these news breaking busts are taking place.......they are "obeying" the law when they use ivory in the pool cues they make.........the ivory is legal.

Definition of LEGAL: deriving authority from or founded on law; having a formal status derived from law often without a basis in actual fact;
established by law, especially statutory; conforming to or permitted by law or established rules; created by the constructions of the law.

American pool cue-makers use ivory that was taken from elephants felled many, many years ago. The ivory that cue-makers use is legal ivory. It's ivory that's been in the USA for a very long time. Poachers are not a source for this ivory......there is more than enough legal ivory for decades and decades to come based upon historical consumption rates. Petition to change the regulation banning all ivory if you prefer but until such time that cue-makers defacto break the law using ivory in their cues, this is a cut and dry matter.

I'm not accusing "American" cue makers of using illegal ivory. And I eat all kinds of food killed many different ways. I even have a lizard wrap on one of my cues and a leather wallet, I guess its just sad to see these beautiful animals being slaughtered, so when I saw this post I felt compelled to say something.

jshea......the poaching of elephants and rhinos in Africa and elsewhere is absolutely horrifying......and a lot more can be done and needs to be done.
Nonetheless, eliminating legal ivory from pool cues, instruments, curios & other artifacts is hardly the way to go about it.

Dude I hate to rain on your PC parade but Africans have different ideas about elephants. Case in point if you are a farmer and Jumbo comes in an tramples and eats a whole year's work.

I hate to say it but elephants are in trouble because of urbanization and out of control population growth. Tribal communities like the plains Indians left lots of room for animals like American bison.

Modernity in Africa is killing elephants as well as poaching.

And this is why we are supposed to kill and eat the animals of the land and use them as a resource. It's called population control. Good point there overlord.

I understand that these elephants are being poached, but what about the ones in the hunting camps over there. Catch, transport, kill, and utilize. Repeat process.

Jshea......rain....my parade......son, you have atrocious reading comprehension skills.....I in favor of legal ivory being used in cues.......Duh?
