14.1 updates

SVB needs to improve his mental game for the one out of 10 times he gets behind.

Shane had a rough match to be honest. Out the fate he follows a ball in the pocket and that set the tone. Later he played a cut and caromed off another ball and scratched again. After that it was typical 14.1 shenanigans, guy missed leaves you nothing. With 40 balls on the table and you have crumbs. But then Shane had his chances and didn't fully take advantage of them, in the end his last miss was his last miss.
Kind of makes you feel normal knowing these guys have mental issues too

Wow Kiamco just grabbed the ball out of the pocket in the semi finals and no penalty (15 points) - that's sorta weird to be honest.

Any thoughts?

At the 14.1 league at Amsterdam Billiards in NYC, grabbing the cue ball in the pocket when you're about to scratch, is a 15 point penalty.

Good question. I have been told that it's unprofessional, interfering with natural roll of the cue ball. What if it wasn't going to drop, and you just grabbed it.

Many players have a problem with that rule.

If it wasn't going to drop in the first place, then I think the mistake of prematurely grabbing the ball should be punishment enough.

Under WPA (world-standardized) 14.1 rules, catching a ball entering a pocket is not automatically a 15-point foul. It is, instead, unsportsmanlike conduct. The penalty is whatever the referee decides it should be, ranging from just a warning all the way to expulsion from the event (unlikely in this situation).

Well...technically it is - but the ref can also "impose a penalty depending on his judgment of the conduct" on other infractions as well.

Catching the ball sort of falls under "(b) changing the position of the balls in play other than by a shot; " that might "change the game to the extent that it cannot be played fairly"

Meaning that - there is always the small chance that the cue ball might jar and stay on the table.

The "worst" penalty in 14.1 results in cue ball in hand in the house. So if the ball jars (behind the triangle lets say, with a shot in the opposite corner possible) and the shooter of the scratch catches the ball, potentially the shooter coming to the table will have a much harder shot behind the line - that corner shot might be now blocked from down table. (Because unlike other games, there is no ball in hand option)

Hard to explain, but technically it is an automatic 6.16 rule infraction under WPA

6.16 Unsportsmanlike Conduct
The normal penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct is the same as for a serious foul, but the referee may impose a penalty depending on his judgment of the conduct. Among other penalties possible are a warning; a standard-foul penalty, which will count as part of a three-foul sequence if applicable; a serious-foul penalty; loss of a rack, set or match; ejection from the competition possibly with forfeiture of all prizes, trophies and standings points.
Unsportsmanlike conduct is any intentional behavior that brings disrepute to the sport or which disrupts or changes the game to the extent that it cannot be played fairly. It includes
(a) distracting the opponent;
(b) changing the position of the balls in play other than by a shot;
(c) playing a shot by intentionally miscuing;
(d) continuing to play after a foul has been called or play has been suspended;
(e) practicing during a match;
(f) marking the table;
(g) delay of the game; and
(h) using equipment inappropriately.

Sounds like splitting hairs but this is reasoning - as far as I understand it anyways! Despite my bad explanation! :)

I would give him a warning the first time.

Appleton vs Hohmann in the finals tomorrow

Nice 2 past champions of this event
If I am not mistaken , Thorsten is slight favorite in 14.1 over Darren
But this Darren guy is almost impossible to beat when he is in final
Darren probably now is player with best mental game in the business
I know it is irony to favor a Brit over German in mental toughness
But really I like any one of them to win
:D
