Hey Guys,

I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with 9BallJim at the worlds 14.1 about a great practice game that he plays called "The 14.1 Ghost".

seems like a great practice game that you can play alone.

If i understood correctly the game is played as follows:

- Ball in hand breakshot.
- Run balls to you miss, when you miss the ghost gets the remainder of the rack +7 (+ value can be modified based on skill level)
- ReRack and break again, using the same rules.
- Play game to a set score

maybe Jim can elaberate on it !!!

Jim also recorded a game where he beat the ghost, maybe he can share that as well.

Good idea. Also, look at the game Alan Hopkins came up with. I think it was called q skills not sure.

Yes, this is interesting and effective practice. I use a modified version whereby I open break, run the first 10 balls (typical straight pool pattern approach), then play the remaining 5 balls in ascending numerical order. I omit the intermediate cue ball placement rules because I'm not really playing it as a keep-score game. Trick is to plan the last five as you move through the first 10 - very demanding of full concentration.

7?

I give the ghost 42 + whatever is left on the table ...

Playing the 14.1 Ghost to 100

You Da Man David !!

like i said the + number can be modified based on skill level or what type of challenge you want to set for yourself. i used the number 7 because thats what he told me he had beat the ghost with.

i havent had a chance to try the practice game yet, so i am not sure what my + Number will be !!

Thanks. Will try it.

We gonna put this on the Ghost Challenge in the main forum? If so we should set at a race to 150 with the + number set at 30 plus any remaining balls. This will allow for 3 or 4 innings/misses per match.

Sounds like a fun way to practice 14.1

I once gave the ghost the 7 out and the break in 9 ball.

You may be giving the ghost too much. Take a look at these stats for two of the world's best: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showpost.php?p=5246976&postcount=34

I win about 1/2 the battles giving the ghost 42+ - I've been doing it that way for quite a few years now. Starting with a pre-set break ball and cue ball in hand, I can usually (not always) get about 42-56 balls IF I get into the balls. Sometimes I run more than that, and of course ... sometimes I run less. That's life. In the video I provided, I wasn't really playing very well that day - and fell short by two balls. I'll stay with giving the ghost 42+ what's left on the table because

a) I refuse to go backwards
b) Because I know I can win with that
c) I feel that for ME, that's fair

I don't shoot as well as Hohmann - in fact I shoot about 4-5 levels below Hohmann (just ask him) - but I know that I can get to 100 in 3 innings more than the average straight pool player. I'm sure that the players in those stats that you provided would have a much easier time than I have giving the ghost 42+. If there was a contest - I'm sure many of the better players would have no problem beating that 14.1 ghost giving up 42+ for every miss. JMO.
