WWYD 9-Ball

Kicking hard or kicking it soft are both risky keep in mind but is the best option (better than a masse). I would lean toward kicking it hard > kicking soft because you can possibly make the ball OR get safe. Kicking it soft only gives you a chance at the safe option.

Yeah, that's true. But kicking hard also opens up the possibility of scratching.

I'm rolling the 9 onto the 7....I'll fight it out from here.

If the 7 isn't froze, the only other shot that doesn't involve getting luck is to hit the 7 off
two rails and play the hook behind the 9.
This is the truth.

Yeah, that's true. But kicking hard also opens up the possibility of scratching.

Kicking soft gives more of a chance of a foul in terms of a legal hit in my opinion (missing the object ball hitting the cue ball too soft since you are trying to play safe). Just an opinion.

Okay, Okay...

I ended up softly kicking off the short rail(to the right) and I left the cue ball locked up right on top of the 7 ball, almost froze. My opponent tried to thin the 7 and get behind the 9 but he missed shape and I got out.

I think kicking the 7 full is a better shot if executed well but it has to be hit almost perfect for it to work out. I felt I had a better chance of executing the slow kick because even if I hit the side of the 7 I still wouldn't leave much of a shot. I only had to worry making contact.

I think that's a good shot.

did you kick the long ways going to the rail by the 8 and make the 7 in the corner top right hand corner? Maybe you managed an incredible jump shot where you somehow didn't go off the table?

i personally like kicking from the right end rail to drive the 7 downtable by the 8. The 9 is a big ball there and you have a good opportunity to get your opponent hooked.

Laying the 9 on top of the 7 is really risky. unless you leave it frozen or really close to the 7 your opponent has a number of ways to either drive the 7 out and leave you up against the 9 or possibly thin off the 7 and leave you down by the 8 hooked with the 9.

The masse shot looks like a crowd pleaser lol. I could see myself hitting this shot but in the process going rail first, make the 7 and then go right into the bottom corner with the cueball. The big ahhhhhh / ohhhhh shot

Presuming you can't bend around the left side of the 9 and kick the 7 in the corner, I'd say smart shot is to kick 2rails-fer r) of pic, then top R) rail of pic- to attempt to mak 7 into corner by 8.

But my guess: ya got lucky!

This situation came up last night:

It's hill-hill, my shot, and I can't see the 7. I ended up winning from here...wwyd? or what do you think I did?

...................

Option 2, kicking to the left short rail to try to make the 7 is the only option I would try.

You are way behind in this rack. The kick safe isn't likely. Kick to make the 7, hit it firm enough that if you made it, the CB would bounce out and clear the 9 ball, for a shot on the 8.

If you make the 7, you win. Any other option doesnt give you a chance to win nor does it bring your odds back over 50/50.

here is my answer. kick off the bottom rail at warp speed. one of 4 scenarios is gonna happen. .

1. hit the 7 full on its gonna drop in the top left pocket. cue ball is gonna roll up on past the 9 leaving you an easy shot at the 8.

2. overcut the 7 its gonna hit the 8 knocking the 8 in the top left pocket and the 7 is gonna roll towards the top right pocket leaving you an easy shot on it.

3. undercut the 7 and its gonna come off the rail hitting the 9 knocking the 9 into the top right corner pocket.

4. hit the 7 ....it goes up table but does not fall. the cue ball comes off the rail freezing up on the back side of the 9 leaving your opponent no shot at the 7.

nah, i ant crazy mentioning the above 4 scenarios. i see shit like that happening all the time from my opponents in apa.:grin-square:

me personally..... i would jump ...attempting to bank it cross corner. if you tried to cut it in the cue ball is likely to fly off table. hitting it full on reduces that chance .

I'm kicking one rail off the right end rail, with speed to get the 7 as close to the other end rail as possible. If you butcher it and hit the rail just before the 7 there is a chance of making it in the far corner pocket, but also a greater chance of leaving a shot of some kind. Therefore I try to hit the ball solid with the right speed. If I'm playing a really great player, I might play the massè instead, since he is unlikely to leave you a much better shot anyway. I'm decent at massè shots and feel I have a pretty good chance of making it.

Agree with most of the posters, kick to the right-side short rail, just hard enough to the send the 7 down to the towards the 8. You've got blockers and will leave distance with a small chance to make it, I think it's the best chance to stay in the game.

Shooting softly at a kick like that is pretty risky imo, and especially on fast cloth, it will be very tough to leave the cue ball stuck on the 7. Foul/sellout is very possible, and best case scenario is you leave the balls close together with no shot, but even then your opponent has an easy return safety. Need to get lucky to win from there.

Risky play but you're stuck w only three balls left. Yhe soft kick worked this time.
IMO, opponent out moved you ,especially, hill-hill.
Glad u got away w it!!

Elevate, l/h masse', drive object ball 3 rails to the middle of the third rail, the nine blocks the bank, your then back in the game. KIS
