Good Hit or Bad Hit?

Looked bad at first, then I zoomed in and the cue ball hit the one then the rail.

Not to mention it would've been impossible for the one ball to take the path it did if he hadn't clipped it going in.

I think this is correct. I think you can also see the 3 start to move before the cueball reaches the side cushion.

The referee was in a terrible position to make the call, and Niels looks understandably perplexed when the ref calls bad hit.

Indeed the path the 1-ball took makes it clear this was not a foul.
So, a bad call from the ref.

What I do like is that the ref was sure of the call and after explaining it to
Niels for a few seconds picked up the cueball. I think the score made it a
little easier for Niels to accept the call without much or any argument.

I think the fact that Warren was a huge favorite to make the one with easy position on the two with or without ball in hand helped Neils swallow that jagged pill.

Hey, pepper, what's the haps?
I'm going with Johnny P, on this one. The One ball, then the rail.
By-the-way, did you notice the room those boys had to play in. The table next to them was in another time zone.

100% a good hit. You can pause the video before the cue ball touches the rail it hits the 1 ball.

I've seen a lot closer hits called as good, this was a bit of an odd bad call, it's pretty clear the 1 was hit first, you can even hear the double hit never mind see it.

The ref did the best he could. And I agree that the ref did the right thing by sticking to his call, even though it was bad, and not getting into it with Niels. Niels handled it like a gentleman.

when the ref has muscles like that, no choice but to agree with him :bash:

Good hit, bad call. The ref was out of position to make the proper call on the shot. If it's me I'm a lot closer to the table. Standing ten feet away doesn't get it when making a call this close. One of my pet peeves with officials I see working world class events is they don't know where to stand to call hits. I see stuff like this all the time. IMO there are only a handful of really good refs worldwide.

Use smartphone with slow motion....maybe in future events or continue with human error

I think close calls that are tough to see are a good part of the game, any game. In this case it's pretty clear it was a good hit, but other really close calls, it's interesting to have an element of human error in the mix.

There is a fantasy / sci-fi book I read about a set of games that the society used to select Citizens from the lower class population, you go through the games which were many and took days, and the winner would be awarded Citizen rank and plenty of wealth. In the book they played football which at the time was an ancient game so was almost like part history part game, with robot refs. Those robot refs were actually programmed to make a bad call just like the original human refs from "our" time. They made a bad call that went in favor of the hero of the book and he was talking to the opponent about a clear bad call, the opponent was more experienced in those games and he explained that it was OK, it was part of the historic recreation of the sport and that he was OK with losing with that error.

Jay, when you have to make a hit call, do you want to know what they are going to do?

Does that help you to be in the right position to see the balls interact?

Do you look for likely CB or OB(s) paths after the shot to help determine the order of collisions, if any? ie: good hit/bad hit?

Do they teach this stuff to referees?

thanks
