Don't Blow the Move..... should be on a shirt.
I heard Freddy the Beard say that in a one-pocket match in reference to a shot that Alex P played. I didn't understand what he meant at the time but I think I'm starting to get it now.
I would put myself at the strong beginner/intermediate level as far as one pocket goes, as I still have a tendency to do stupid things that cost me games. Last night I was playing well and beat the brakes off a solid local who is recognized primarily as a 1p player. Granted, he wasn't playing his best. But he did run 8 and out on me off MY break twice and I didn't flub the break either...so I can't say he was playing terrible.
To the point...I wasn't giving up the move. When I did, it cost me because this guy knows 1p and is always a threat to run out. So I've been thinking about this for a while and had sort of an epiphany...If you never blow the move, it's going to take a STRONG player or a true 1p player at least your speed to beat you. How strong is that?
I'm sure this comes across as common sense to you more experienced players, but I wanted to share my little enlightenment.
I was talking to a buddy of mine (a couple of years ago) who used to do the road in the 50's-the 70's about an article I read on Bensingers in Chicago. I mentioned that Freddy said Artie Bodendorfer
never lost...like...ever. Period. And it was because he was brilliant with percentage play and absolutely refused to give up the move. He didn't care if it took three days. My friend told me he was farmiliar with Artie and wouldn't play him because, in his words, "It wasn't worth it. You couldn't win anything playing that guy." That's some strong praise, IMO, from a guy who's still a threat to run 15 and out on you at any time in his 70's.
Anyway, I don't know if this post really has a point. I just wanted to share some thoughts and maybe get some opinions on the subject from all you one pocket players out there.
As a side note, I'm usually not one to just share my thoughts like this. I have, however, been drinking and I get very talkative after a few glasses of whiskey...and this Bulleit Rye is yummy!![]()
Well, the obvious is the obvious.
What I found more interesting is this, "As a side note, I'm usually not one to just share my thoughts like this. I have, however, been drinking and I get very talkative after a few glasses of whiskey...and this Bulleit Rye is yummy!"
