Meanwhile in Qatar

Fargoratings are not about determining odds, though they'll provide a a guideline most of the time. They rate past and recent performances.

They can't tell you if a guy is in form on the practice table, playing more than usual, having problems at home, got beaten on bad rolls in his last few matches and all the other variables that make some guys play better or worse than their previous performances in a current event.

I think they're fantastic, but one has to look at them in perspective... they are not a crystal ball, nor a perfect measure of past performance, but a great method to summarize available data.

I'm not going to get into discussion about ratings and how things are working in pool, but all I want to say is that pool isn't tennis. Rating in tennis really mean something, usually higher rated players win there, maybe do what they do?

I'd love to see a tournament seeded like tennis, with the FargoRate rating system. I'd bet that we would see similar results. When you have a seeded event, there's a much greater chance that the ratings will hold true. With random draw, you can end up with a lot more evenly matched early round matches, especially between the top players. Those matches are essentially pick 'em matches. If you seeded a 64 player field, you'd have 4 #1-16 seeded players, just like the NCAA tournament. In order for a top 4 player to be upset, he'd need to be beaten by (1st round, 16 seed) a player rated 61-64; (2nd round, 8 seed) a player rated 29-32; (3rd round, 4 seed) a player rated 13-16; (4th round, 2 seed) 5-8. I doubt we'll ever see a field that consists of all of the top players, so the actual separation in rating will be greater, especially in regional tournaments.

Of course, there are a lot of proponents of the "random draw" in the pool world, but much of the concern over seeding stems from the fact that seeding could only be accomplished subjectively. Now that we have a computed rating system, that concern should be greatly reduced.

We can now add an 11-6 victory over the WPA #1 player Albin Ouschan.

Okay so Wu has ratings from the last 2 years. In an older post you told me Alex is rated on the last year. I assume this is because Alex didn't play much last year. Is this the case with other players?

I will admit I paid too much attention to the numbers on the left rather than the right.

I believe he posted Wu's matches for the last two years, because you basically asked him what Wu had done recently to deserve his rating. I believe they have data going back many more years, but there is a depreciation in the value of the data as it ages. Sometimes Mike posts data for given players over a specific time-frame, because people have questioned the ratings - ie. Johnny Archer's recent performances. There are a few helpful videos on the fargorate.com website that should answer your other questions.

What? These are only Wu's past 2 years. LOL I tot he was napping in past 2 years with health issues, taking break etc That is mind boggling
So that means his stat for his peak years when he won W9B, W8B from 2005 up to then W10B final 2008 must be off the charts probably 900+. Especially since those he was beating those top players who were ranked so far above him. I mean he was like unseeded unknown when he won 2005 like when Becker won Wimbledon as unknown unseeded player LOL :D

To clarify, his rating (as the top in the world) comes from all his games, including the old ones. As others have said, though, older games get less weight than current games.

What is from the last two years is the records I posted against WPA players ranked above him. He had some monster matches in the tournament that trailed the China Open this year that some people may not be aware of...

Yes , Wu won the CBSA event after China Open and then recently got into another CBSA event final, After cos in his empty period from 2008 when he had issues, miliatary he did win All Japan one year also and also coached Chen Si Ming

I'd love to see SVB vs. Wu in the finals, but it's possible it will be Ko vs. Ko.
SVB v Wu looks likely as Wu prevails in 9 ball over Big Ko but really at this level any one of the 4 can win and will be deserving winner
The dream final SVB v Big Ko should be 10 ball not 9 ball
Ko v Ko will be interesting one and the H2H apparently is that Lil Ko is ahead
:grin-square:
