What's The Deal With 4% PayPal Fee???

I want to know where this 4% charge came from that a lot of these sellers on the forum are laying off on the buyer. PayPal charges the seller 2.9% + .30 cents for a sale.......not the buyer. If the seller wants to add that to his price then that's fine and go for it.

2.9% rounded up is 3% unless my math is wrong or there is a different way of teaching in school nowadays. Who came up with the magic number 4 and why?

By the way it's just a few more dollars for me so I really don't care about a couple of dollars. I just want to know where is started and why it started.

Is there a different fee for an overseas transaction? Maybe covering the spectrum... who knows.

It's annoying to me. First most people ask way to much for their cue and then they have the balls to ask for another 4% to cover PayPal fees. Really?
Coming from someone who has sold several thousand things online --- just build it into your price. You don't look nearly as greedy. IMO.

I decline to pay it and simply tell the seller I will pay actual fees....it's like charging me $24.95 to ship me a set of pool balls that can be shipped anywhere in the USA for under $13.00 using a signed receipt too.....I view these types to be less than forthright sellers.

I've always wondered where the 4 came from as well.., no idea.

I agree they should just build it into the price and I'm not sure where the 4% came from but I dislike the ones that require it as a gift more. I had a drawn out transaction that I was dumb enough to use the gift feature. I now bypass any item that requests payment through gift.

Yes the paypal fee is higher if someone is out of the country.

For all my sales, I offer free shipping and I pay all the fees.
This makes it easy for buyers.

Or alternatively, you could only offer the fee to those that wish to pay by paypal, thus it is a "discount" for those that pay byu another method. Cash for example.

If more buyers would simply pay the price, I'm sure you guys would never be bothered with seeing this kind of 4% statement...lol :)

Well, then there's the school of thought that if cue sellers would realize that the market today is not the market of 2008 & price their cues accordingly & also understand that sellers fees are called that for a reason, IE, the cost of doing business, then they might sell those cues. It's a matter of perspective

I don't want anyone to take offense, but, cueaddicts comment is very real.

It would be interesting to find out how many az members have actually paid full list price for a pool cue in their lifetime. The last cue I remember selling at full list price was back in 1993, a Huebler, before the world wide web

Nicely said and this perspective applies to the charges for pool time as well. People don't have a lot of money, so you would think pool time should represent a value to the customer after all you are selling time and it takes time in order to realize that you had fun. When you have fun and a value you will spend more at the bar and in food as well because you are having affordable fun. The same guy who wouldn't spend $ 20 in pool time many times will spend $ 25 if he is getting pool and beer and having a good time. Value adds value and people like a value.

Not trying to be a smartass, but you let a guy walk on a 8k wager that was supposed to be 'frozen up', and now you are worried about someone selling a cue with 1% higher fees than what paypal normally charges?

Pool players truly are a different breed............. :grin-square:

I don't agree. As a seller, I'm guaranteed my money from PayPal, and it's nice not to have to go through any bs to get payment, no more money orders or personal checks that have to clear, no credit card machine needed, it's hassle free.

And if you want them to pay the price, just up the price of your cue, it's pretty simple really. I have to sell chalk for more on Ebay because of the ebay cut and the paypal cut, but so does everyone else, so the price is a wee bit higher.

I don't think I'd have the nerve to tell someone to pay the 10% Ebay charge ??

LOL Chuck. I pay the 4% fee for the person selling the item when I buy it and don't ever complain about it. I'm not complaining about it here. I'm on of those guys that has paid full price and then some for every single item I've bought off of AZ. I don't haggle with anyone on the price.....it's not how I do business. If I want it I'll pay what the person wants.

I was just wondering where the 4% fee came from. Anybody got anything for sale? I'm a buyer here on AZ.....not a seller.

The cue market is in a place where buyers expect to pay much less than asking price. I've priced cues at what I feel are reasonable levels with some downward wiggle room, and almost invariably buyers ask to pay somewhere around 70% of said price. The buyers expect the 3% fees to be the seller's cost, so the seller is then losing money.

I get the fact that cues should be priced reasonably, but many sellers aren't even recouping their investment, thus many ask for fees to be covered.
