Break cue construction

Going to ask my cue maker to make me a break cue,.

Decided on the following.

1. Purpleheart sleeve, handle, and forearm
2. Laminated shaft
3. 3/4 inch Phenolic ferrule, Samsara tip

Question
1. What type of joint is advisable for a break cue ? I was thinking of Phenolic flat face joint with a 3/8 x 10 pin.

2. I have seen break cues with a different material on the first few inches of the shaft. I guess this would be for added stiffness, is there any benefit to adding a thick purple heart sleeve to the first few inches (6 to 7 inches? ) of the joint area off the shaft to increase the stiffness off the laminated shaft ?
If adding a cored sleeve is ideal, how thick should the sleeve be ?

You don't trust your maker?
The last thing he'd want to hear is you asking around and changing your mind ovef and over again.

Purpleheart core. 3/8-10 SS pin. Maple or purpleheart shaft with phenolic or Garolite insert in the shaft.
Short G10 ferrule and Taom 2.0 tip

He is not into break cues...

Besides the purple heart sleeve on the shaft is somewhat of a new idea :) wanted to hear what the experts say....

i'm not like my wife who keeps changing his mind at the last minute......good thing she is not a member hear :)

I like a purpleheart shaft. Others use laminated shafts, so I will say to each his own on that. I also like a flat faced 1 inch phenolic joint with a 3/8 X 10 pin.

Hope that helps,

Any idea of what weight this end up with ?

Is purple heart heavier than Mac Ebony or Paduak ?

I have Mac ebony / Paduak cue and its about 19oz. (Not cored)

I am thinking about having a removable butt sleeve to cut weight, my hand does not reach the butt sleeve anyways on my current break cue...

All pplheart butt will be too heavy for my liking.

Specific gravity of Paduak is .72, Mac Ebo is 1.09 and Purpleheart is .86. These are just averages. An all PH cue can vary over 3ozs in final weight depending on the wood and at times is as light as Maple.
Purpleheart or laminated shafts work great for break cues.

i just made one

had a buddy luck into a bunch of local missouri hedge that was at 5 %. i made both the butt and shaft using hedge. 18 0z, 58 inch cue that had a bit thinner taper on the butt and a 12 3/4 mm shaft. flat face 3/8 by 10 pin , black linen fiber rings, no ferrule just a carbon fiber pad and a super pro tip.

breaks as good if not better than any break cue i have ever seen.

Does the second joint on the Jump break take away something from a dedicated break cue ?

Maybe, depends how you cue is constructed.
But I would say it's more a theoretical thing.
I do prefer a separate jump cue.
