*** Mosconi Cup 2015 Updates Thread ***

It isn't like the Euros are playing over their heads, and the Americans are playing badly. Nick VDB and Daz are not playing that well. Ouschan is a machine. Boyes is playing very well, and Feijen is playing the way he plays. Shane is playing ok, Skylar and Justin are playing well, and Mike and Corey are succumbing to the pressure.

Pool is starting to mirror golf. For a long time, Americans dominated the PGA. There was the odd European that would come and win, but if you look at the face of golf now, the Euros are starting to produce the top golfers in the world. If you look at their schedule, they compete at least twice as often as the American golfers. They compete at most of the PGA events, as well as European tour events. Steel sharpens steel. You get experience by playing the best players in the world as often as you can.

have you looked at the world rankings in golf lately? Didn't think so. 6 of the top 10 are Americans and 13 of the top 25 are American. Compare that with 3 Euros in the top 10 and 7 Euros in the top 25. I'm assuming you are basing it on the Ryder Cup, which much like the Mosconi Cup is an exhibition and for whatever reason the Euro team gels better, but the comparison ends there. US golf is BY FAR, WAY better than European golf and it's not even close.

I'm not looking at 2015, specifically. The top golfers of the past decade, excluding Tiger, have been guys like Ernie Els, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Jason Day, etc.

In 2014, there was one American in the top 6, and two in the top 8. The year before was much of the same. 2015 was a banner year for the US, but it isn't indicative of what's going on in golf, aside from Tiger's run as #1.

So, I'm not basing my results on the Ryder Cup. Look up the numbers yourself, if you don't believe me.

Ernie Els and Jason Day are from South Africa and Adam Scott is Australian. American dominance over European golf has ALWAYS been there. And I'm not sure what you're referring to in '13 and '14 but American's have always dominated the world golf rankings

1 NIR Rory McIlroy
2 SWE Henrik Stenson
3 AUS Adam Scott
4 USA Bubba Watson
5 ESP Sergio Garcia
6 ENG Justin Rose

There's the top 6 golfers for a complete 2014 season. US is BY FAR, WAY better than......whom?

I guess I must struggle with the understanding of the word "ALWAYS". I just showed you who the world #1 was last year. And #2. And #3. Always means EVERY TIME, right?

Yes, the Americans USED to own the top spots in golf. In the 90s, the top 10 were probably 80% American. The 2000s, slightly less. This decade, the world is taking at least half of the top 10. And that trend will continue. The numbers don't lie.

look at the top 25 in the world at the end of 2014. 14 Americans and 8 Europeans. Look at the major winners over the years. Since 2000 there have been 35 US major winners and only 12 Euro major winners. Since 2009, which is post-Tiger major wins, the US has 12 major wins and Europe 9. In the last 3 years, '13-'14-'15, the US has won 6 majors and Europe has won 3. Outside of the Ryder Cup, the US dominates European golf, plain and simple.

no, you didn't show me who the world #1 was last year, you showed me the top 6 in the owgr at the end of the 52nd week. You don't even know how the stats work, lol

I absolutely love to watch Bergman and Sky play. I really hope Justin leads off tomorrow and Sky or Shane is next. It was beautiful pool played by Justin against Appleton. Controlled aggression.

Yep. And the USA has the third largest population in the world, and the most golf courses, per capita, in the world. You SHOULD have the top 100 golfers in the world, yet you don't. Just based on economy, population, and access, you should literally DOMINATE golf. You don't. That was my point.

2013:

1 Tiger Woods, USA
2 Adam Scott, AUS
3 Henrik Stenson, SWE
4 Justin Rose, ENG
5 Phil Mickelson, USA
6 Rory McIlroy, NIR
7 Matt Kuchar, USA
8 Steve Stricker, USA
9 Zach Johnson, USA
10 Sergio Garcia, ESP

Care to show me that "ALWAYS" you were referring to, regarding the US "dominating" golf? Sure, you'll have the most players in the top 100, as you should, with a population of over 300 million, and the financial resources to golf. I don't expect many golf pros to come out of Ethiopia. Or Nigeria. I would estimate that the US is responsible for providing the tours with roughly 70% of the professional golfers.

2013, two Americans in the top 6. 5 in the top 10. I'd say those Euros aren't quite your "chew toys" anymore. They're competing with you, and beating you just as often as you're beating them.

I agree, I hope Justin leads the team off tomorrow. He showed up to the table without fear and played his game and played it well. "Controlled aggression" is a great way to put it.

The #1 golfer for 2014 was Rory McIlroy. Care to debate it? Look up the world rankings for 2014. They're on the web.

Hint: he's from Ireland.

He's also the #3 this year, behind Spaeth, even though he played less events, and Day, a non-American.

Won the Stanley Cup lately?

Nope. The world has become better at hockey. And, an American is set to possibly beat the single season scoring record that was set by a Canadian. Canadians have long given up any notion that hockey is "our game".

The rankings are week to week, not year to year. Rory had the top spot for part of this year, Day for another part, and Spieth for another part. Spieth currently holds the spot. Tiger held the #1 spot the first part of 2014 and then Rory took it some time around April I think. The point is that American's dominate the world stage on a whole in golf. It's always been that way and will continue. A ton of Euros and other countries top golfers now live in the US and play on the PGA tour simply because the other world tours are way inferior.

Here's the top 16 golfers, ranked by their number of weeks at #1

lmao, and your point with that?

Tiger dominated like no other golfer other than Jack. The other #1's mean nothing except they've been #1. American's have always dominated the top 10-25-50 in the world rankings. PERIOD/EXCLAMATION point

With the player mics being juiced up today the Mike and Sky interaction was great.

"Put it anywhere, I'll get you there."

Kid is gonna be great.

The Ryder Cup is actually a good comparison. The USA has a Tiger Woods type player in SVB who should be dominant, but for whatever reason seems unfit for the format and has a sub-.500 record. When your #1 doesn't play like a #1, then of course the whole team is going to suffer.

Then years of losing lead to a rot from the top unless there is an infusion of fresh players who can change the negative psychology - just as Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth may be doing with the American team in golf. But as long as that underperforming #1 player is there, the USA is going to have issues, especially when there are only 5 players on each team.
