Jay Helfert

I'll say it again... YOU get on a mike, live to streaming or TV (even taped) and try not to trip over your words, hopefully form complete sentences, etc. Most pool players I know start every sentence with "I don't like that, I like...."

It ain't easy.

Um....I do some commentary. And I'm terrible. I'm the last option.

What I don't do....is tell everyone who is seeing balls sliding in.....that the table is tight.....AND THEN DEFEND IT THE NEXT DAY.

Carry on.

No, you just whine about it on the internet :)
That's MUCH better.

Please, carry on.

If it will help your blood pressure.....you got this right. But you should go a step further. The Euro's cue ball control PERIOD....whether running out, playing safe or kicking....exceeds the Americans.

Stroking fundamentals.

The majority of times, the Euro's, when in line, stay in line. If they don't get out they jar a ball.

The Americans can not stay in line as often. They miss position....pin point position....when proper angles need to be kept....way too often.

There is one exception to that....and that is Justin Bergman. He BY FAR has the best cue ball of the Americans.....not even close....and NOT ONE....of the Euros is better. He finally made enough balls on the break to show it against Appleton. Made a "32nd of an inch" mistake or would have beaten Appleton 5-1.

Feel better now? :D

We have been talking about this for three days now. Maybe you need an ear exam.

Where Europe is beating us consistently is on defensive play. Their kicking and safety play has been far better than USA overall.

Um....Jay....you realize I quoted you, right?

I responded to YOUR QUOTE.

If you've been saying it for 3 days.....why did you leave it out of your quote?

Maybe you need an ear exam.

Maybe a hanky for you?

4.25" for these guys is NOT that tight. TV lights WILL make them much tougher. I hit balls on the TV table at the '07 DCC and was blown away by how fast, bouncy and tight it played. My home spot has two GC4's w/3&7/8" pockets. Now that's TIGHT. I think Hardtimes-Bellflower has a couple that tight also.

Yup, try table 6 at Hard Times Bellflower.. it'll have you talking to yourself.. MAYBE 4"..
can't get two balls anywhere past the points.

Read this....

Take out Bergman's stats (91% success rate) and where does that leave the rest of Team USA and their break? I can tell you where it leaves them. Failing on the break, down 9-6 and their backs against the wall.

Point taken.

Watchez is the teacher....

Thank you,

Except we're talking about a tournament table, not a gambling/gaff table. I think that a standard size pocket for tournaments would be 4 1/2". So 4 1/4" with the Diamond shelf can't be considered loose.

It definitely seemed to me that the players missed way more than they would have on a 4 1/2" non-Diamond table, new cloth notwithstanding.

Regardless of pocket size & conditions both sides are playing on them.

As good as Bergman is playing he gave ball in hand trying to masse & perhaps spin off the rail to hit a ball.

Earlier I heard Boyd tell his teammate after his suggestion to get shape, 'no it won't grab'.

Knowing the conditions is part of the game.

Also Deshaine virtually gave a point away when he went for a corner shot with power, when all he had to do was hit a soft slight back cut into the bigger side pocket.

All that said, Go USA!

In regard to pocket size/difficulty:

Compared to all other Diamond tables, the pockets are tight.

Compared to all Diamond tables with 4 1/4" pockets, the pockets are loose.

Semantics.

If you noticed a lot of the missed shots were missed by a 1/2 diamond. There was a lot of shots missed because of skids. The Europe team seemed to get it that balls were skidding a lot and didn't try to get pinpoint position. They just took the longer straighter shots. Because they have no fear of 7' or 8' shots.

If team U.S.A. can win 3 out 5 today, I'd say they did OK for the tournament. Keep in mind though, that Team Europe played at about 80% of their potential.

Like the old Brooklyn Bum's use to say after most seasons. "Wait Till Next Year". Johnnyt

"He basically has the same shot, just a different angle." - Jay Helfert

....doesn't that make it a different shot?

This dumbed-down commentary is hard to bear as a player. Get Jeremy Jones or another pro in there for color commentary to go with Wych.

this is televised on ESPN, this isn't a big truck stream, you can't commentate the same....everyone needs to relax.

I just plain don't like his commentary this time around, he's making all kinds of bad calls and wrong calls and sounds like when Alvin (We Live) is commenting, he is over compensating for sure.

To a point I can agree with you. In my example, Wych can give you basic commentary (I enjoy listening to him, actually) and Jones would give expert commentary when needed. Almost every sport does commentary this way. But I agree you can't talk over the head of an average viewer- though how many average viewers are there really when it's an ESPN3 stream and you have to go out of your way to watch?

You can tell they don't have a feed to watch like we do because they're mis-calling shape at a terrible rate. They should be watching the same thing the viewers are watching.

I hear Donald Trump wants to takeover as Captain for next year's Mosconi Cup.

Have you ever watched an NFL game on ESPN? The commentary can get pretty detailed at times. Especially when Gruden is in the booth. It's not just, "He throw the ball. OH look, now he catch it. Now he is running."

Also, it was streamed on ESPN3, but televised on Sky Sports, with the UK being the target audience. A target audience that is likely knowledgeable enough to handle some solid commentary.

What is Gruden's salary? What's the budget for an NFL production?

Wych can give basic commentary??

You DO know he was one of the top snooker players in the world, at one point, right? He played a hill hill 9 ball match with Efren in the mid 2000s.
