Mobsters (Mafia) that were really into the pool scene?

Harry Peetros (high up in Greek circles) used to play at Mosconi's room in Philadelphia Pa. and other poolrooms in Philly back then. "removed" permanently from the area one day before Steve Bouras in May 1981 (Jerry Blavat and Martorano were wounded in that shooting). Bouras was top person in Greek circles then. Sad part of history though. Must agree that this doesn't help pool today but is true history so can't be denied.

Harry was considered the best 9 ball player in the city at that time if memory serves me correctly. I was very good friends with his nephew but I never met Harry.

How would "mob influence in pool" have anything to do with moving pool into the mainstream society again? Not smart to bring up topics such as this if you really care about pool becoming legit ever again. We are losing whatever few pool halls have survived the 2008 recession and the demise of pool on mainstream ESPN and now you want to know it's past association with the Mob?? You are just throwing another shovel of dirt on U.S. pool's inevitable burial with comments and curiosities such as yours. Stop fantasizing and start doing something constructive for the game, please! Being Italian myself, I can tell you that we are proud of our great player's contributions to the game, and our many great players past and some present -- the Mob had nothing to do with a positive image of anything it touched - so let it go.

Relax Mike. For better or worse some shady characters populated the pool rooms and they still do. I have a feeling you play in your basement. That's the beauty of a poolroom, Mike, the diversity. You can walk into any real poolroom and find a game, action or not with a criminal, family man, black, white, Indian, Asian, young or old. There's no place on earth like a poolroom.

Well said. I agree 100%. You get street smart quick in those kind of rooms. Johnnyt

In New York City ---- Yep. Plenty of mob guys hung out in pool rooms back in the 70's 80's and 90's. Pool rooms were actually safer when they were around. The last thing they wanted was for something to happen that would bring the police to the pool room. Players behaved themselves around these guys. They knew the consequences if they didn't.

Well said.,poolrooms truly are a melting pot.

Wonder how the writer feels about copping off the title for that book?
The Green Felt Jungle was published in 1963. Written by Ed Reid and Ovid Demaris. It was mainly about The Outfit and Las Vegas.
Now he uses the same title for a treatise on pool shooting gambling??
Isn't that referred to as theft of intellectual property?
Just wondering.?

Summed up in one word: 'whoops'

Bet Mike Sigel could tell a story or two about who backed him in his early days. Don't think any of those guys lived to retirement age. Remember one guy who played at Ridge Billiards in the 1970's who didn't pay after a loss. Vito, Guido and Luka had nothing on the three guys who put him in the hospital. Then again, the mob never really existed. Correct?

I don't think that the titles of books are protected under copyright.

Same for titles of songs, sculptures, paintings etc...

You are correct. There is no protection for those. Movies reuse titles more often than most people realize.

+1..............

Mob guys have been hanging in poolrooms for as long as I can remember. That's a given. Many mob guys grew up in poolrooms and that's a fact Jack.

There were always mob guys in the stands at Johnston City and especially the Stardust. They admired the skills of the top players. Vegas was better run when the mob controlled it!

I remember one notorious outlaw who took a liking to me in L.A. many years ago. He really wanted to be good at pool and one day asked me to tell him the secret to the game, as if there was one. I told him three years of complete obsession was a good start, not what he wanted to hear.

Everyone that actually knows better will not be posting here, everyone else just has a good " story " so enjoy guys.
