Gambling...not sure I like it, even when I win.

There's a gem in there: "I only play people I enjoy being around.

Wise approach.

If you don't like playing for money don't play for money. If you like playing for money then play for money. After 50 years of playing pool for money I wouldn't play any other way. I have figured out a few things now that I have a little money. I only play people that have money and will pay and people I enjoy being around. As far as tournaments go they are much closer to gambling than 2 players matching up. Lot of uncontrollable factors, the draw the short races and rotation pool. I think what bothers some about people matching up and playing for money is it can not be controlled like tournaments. Two grown men make a game, play what ever rules they want, play for how much they want, they dress how they want go to the bathroom or take a break when they want. Just too much freedom in matching up and minding your own business. I win I lose but I am ahead of the game over the years. Playing for money is real competition I mean both players really want to win and sometimes need to win. I wonder if these players that never bet ever wonder if they can dig down and win when they really need to. There is a big difference between having to win and wanting to win. And that is why the top players are so hard to beat they have to win and they play people that have to win. If you are not comfortable playing for money then don't but don't try and create some kind of moral high ground to justify your fear of losing.

Never needed to gamble to get up for anything.Have won and lost the little I have tried.I feel like I robbed guys when I win,and like a sucker when I lost.I get no high from it at all.... But if they're playing for fun, or playing for money at two tables guess which one I'll sit next to ?

nice post

I don't know what it is with this country lately, but every parent used to teach their children the mantra of "mind your own business" ... it's a good life lesson to learn

nowadays you'd think everyone had some "right" to tell someone else what they should or shouldn't do... or think.... a moral highground if you will.... f u comes quickly to mind

is it HOA's? the internet's arrival? the liberal education system? what? where the f does this come from? it is pervasive... and destructive.... and so so very sad and pathetic

fun is where you find it... period.... and we need more fun... not more social police

Booze and gambling is a major part of the golf club. You must not golf much. I would love to play in a smoke free alcohol free pool hall that had decent equipment too. The reason is to get kids in the game.......
.
......I don't gamble. Or should I say I rarely gamble but when I do it's small stuff like a $1-$2 dollar ring game. I have nothing against gambling or those that gamble. In fact, I really enjoy watching a gambling match, more money, more excitement. I don't need money to be on the line to play my best. I self motivate just fine.

Nothing wrong with 'self motivation'! But I would venture to say, its attitudes like you are expressing, (among other things) that caused poker to take off, while pool remained stagnant!..You say you like high stakes excitement, but you want a puritanical atmosphere to pursue it in!..Ain't gonna happen..People want to see "warts and all", to add a little flavor and realism!

I would trade three "Dippy Dave's", for 3,000 clean cut, non-smoking, alcohol free kids, if you want to stimulate interest, and action!..Let our kids seek out their own reasons for pursuing a reason to get hooked on pool, golf, or gambling!..Watching Boy Scouts help little old ladies across the street, ain't ever gonna draw a crowd!..Seeing someone bet 50K on a pool game, or the turn of a card, just might get the juices flowing!..It did it for us, didn't it? ;)

When I was a beginner, people were constantly trying to gamble with me...I turned most of them down. Then I started to get slightly better, and suddenly half the people were not so keen anymore...Then I got even better than that and now not a whole lot of people are very keen at all. Bottom feeding scum is what these people were.

Most "gamblers" are not out to gamble at all, they want to take your money without any risk. A top player that was robbing me when I was starting out does not want to play me now, even if he is considered to be a slight favourite or large favourite (depending on the game). And forget about getting any decent handicap from this guy. At this point, I'd have to play him even. The point is that there is a chance, a real chance, he might lose and therefore he simply won't play. This category of "gambler" IMO is 998% of everybody that actually plays for money. The other 2 percent consist of 2 categories of players. One is the go-off artist, or pathological gambler. This guy won't last long and usually ends up in gamblers anonymous or a dumpster. The second category is the person who uses gambling as a learning tool. That is a rare breed indeed.

The so called "gentleman gambler" is such a rare breed for our intents and purposes he doesn't exist at all. I've certainly never met anyone who will shake my hand and say well played when he loses, and mean it. They've all whined, and a lot tried to get out of paying, one way or another, which is how I learned to post, always. This is complicated somewhat by the fact that gambling is illegal here and has to be done in secret.

When all is said and done, who needs all this negativity? I play for recreation and love of the game. I get no kick out of beating people out of money they possibly cannot afford to lose, ruining their day. And if I know in advance that I can beat them, there is absolutely no joy to be had what so ever. Listening to people whine and complain after the fact is not fun or entertaining to me. I can't imagine anyone but a sadist taking enjoyment in that. Winning a tournament on the other hand, that is real joy! Everyone plays their hardest, and nobody is going home broke or possibly everyone, depending on the price fund, lol.

If you want a slight thrill you can always play for small change with your friends. That is different, just something to keep the fun banter going.

Nobody asked for a lesson.
You, by your own admission, said it isn't how the poolroom works anyway.man wants to know if it is ok to be one who doesn't gamble.

Yes, it is ok. Of course, he may never get to play against a good player for anything longer than a tourney set...but so what?

There's enough balls to pocket in this world for us all to enjoy pool on our own terms.

It's a forum, you can say whatever you like, and so will I .

I wrote this the couple days ago in another thread. I wanted to include it in this thread because I think even more relevant in this one than the original on. Sorry about the size, I had to screen shot it because I don't know how to qout from different threads. If anyone does I'll try to do that thanks!

I'm not opposed to gambling, but unless you are outright hustling weaker players, I don't see how people afford it. I'm a working stiff and if I lost $200-$300 in a night it would kill the pocket book and cause conflict with my wife. Sure I might win but if I don't I'm screwed and even people who play lights out can't win every time. And this is why we have backers imo

I have never been much for for gambling but I don't have a problem with people who like to gamble. My only problem is with sore loser's and I have encountered my share of them.

Although I did not like to gamble because of the problems associated with it is was pretty much unavoidable when I bar hopped back in the 80's.

Almost ever time I walked into a bar and put up my quarters they were playing for something. Usually 5.00- 10.00 a game. If you wanted to play you pretty much had to agree with the winner of the table or go look for another table where they were not gambling.

It just amazes me the number of times I was called a hustler when the loser was the one who insisted we play for money.

Also been run out of a bar once by an owner who kept insisting we play for money and kept insisting the amount be raised which I reluctantly agreed to after telling him all I wanted to do was enjoy playing pool and would be perfectly happy to play for nothing more than beers. After he got up a couple hundred loser he called me a hustler and threw mw out if his BA and banned me forever. Imagine that !

And yea...i have been air barreled a few times also. Just my trusting nature I guess.

One thing I dont understand is the mentality ....i have fo play for something to play my best....either you want to win or you don't. Money on the line should make no difference.

Got a story bout a guy who kept insisting playing for money made him play better but this post is long enough.

I don't gamble much, at all. Not a big fan. However, people occasionally talk me into it. Last week I lost $40, which sucked. Tonight I won $60, which was nice, compre try harder and (hopefully) play better........

In general playing for money (it is not Gambling in my opinion) is the one way to ensure opponent is giving his/her best.

The average pool player is a broke
I lost a few hundred to C---- J---(a noted one pocket player),he came back and tried tp match up again
when we didn't agree on the spot ,
he asked to borrow $40

Cliff's move to put the bite on someone is almost stronger than his 1 pocket game was in his prime

In my pool hall there are so many good players just sitting around that won't play you a game unless you gamble. They would rather just sit there and do nothing. They have obviously lost their love for the game. The gamble took over and ruined it for them. Like so many posting here. Hey to each his own but my wife loves the slots and it has almost ended our marriage many times. She wins one time out and loses the next 3. I explain to here how anybody who isn't a gambler would see you as being a fool because you are. So yes I hate to gamble at pool it ruins everything about the game I love.

I think what bothers me is some people just can't enjoy the game unless money is on the line. I've had people stop and walk away in the middle of racking because I said "I don't play for money". That's the closest I've come to violence at the pool table...f**king rude as sh*t!

seems some ONLY play pool to gamble,
i dont care for it, and its kinda of a turn away from the game for me, id watch a big money game like a stream but i dont care for it personally,
i play for the challenge

The challenge of the game is fun.

It's sad to see people lose the love for the game they spent their life learning. That's life, I suppose. There are some people in my poolhall who only come in to chat and play cards (illegally). They don't even bring their cues anymore:(.

A fool and their money are soon parted. I have seen guys playing for $100's that can't run a rack and when busted want to borrow more to "beat that guy".

Only winner in a pool match over time is the house. They just love those long sessions.

Threads like this one make me alternately laugh or cry.
Here's a trivia question for ya; who said: "By all means, bet a few bucks. You'll learn to handle the games' unique pressures much faster and much better."
I also have an old post of mine but it has the answer, so I'll post it later, maybe.

George Fels?

I once knew a guy who's dog ran away cause he gambled too much.

So anybody that gambles on pool is a degenerate lowlife who never wins ? There's lots of guys doing just fine gambling on pool.

Stick to playing for patches and trips to of all places Vegas ....where they have lots of gambling.
