One more practice day trashed.

I know this has been discussed before. I think that it must be brought to forum again in the hopes that someone may read this who is not aware how rude and inconsiderate they are being. I go to the pool hall at the times when it is most likely that no one is in there. As far away from the APA events as possible. I am only there to practice to advance my own skill level. I do not want to gamble. I am not there to socialize. I am there to work. The pool room layout is a rectangle. 75% of the pool room is empty. I am on the edge of the 25% occupied. I have 2 tales empty on one side and 6 tables empty on the other side. I have 8 tables empty on a diagonal.

A party of 5 guys comes in which later grew to 8 and where do you think they take up residence. That's right. Right next to me. And where do you think they are all standing around. In the empty table area on the other side. In the empty area the is 75% of the entire pool room. No! of course not. They are parked in my practice area where I can't even walk around my own table. I can't even get to my own case laying on the counter three feet away to answer my phone because there are two guys standing there. There is no excuse for this level of rudeness and it goes on and on. I was so fed up today I just shoved guys out of the way then said excuse me after. WTF is wrong with these people.

If you and your crew show up early at the pool room and there is one guy off alone hitting balls and he looks pretty good, here 's a clue. HE DOES NOT WANT TO TALK TO YOU. Leave him alone.

You're not fooling anyone, your practice day was screwed because you're spending too much time in npr

Just kidding :). I can sympathize, I'm sure many of us can. Tell me, does your room assign tables as they enter, or can the customer just pick a table?
In the past when I have encountered a similar situation, if I have a relationship with the counter person I'll ask if they will please have folks that come in play at least a couple of tables away until otherwise necessary. If I sit and have a drink after or have a bite, and even if I don't I'll always show my appreciation to the counter person when I'm done. A few bucks and a friendly attitude can go a long way, especially when the APA tournament drinkers and tippers are in the house, know what I mean?

Try going early to a slick Willie's or Barneys, I did today and had the whole place to myself, also why not just move to a table across the room from them?

If this truly is a problem then I'm thinking you aren't taking good enough care of your houseman. I ALWAYS made it a point to take VERY GOOD care of my house man. I can garuntee a lot of weeks my gappers given were more than the guy made all week working there. I literally had the run of the place. There was nothing I couldn't do, nothing that I couldn't ask for and he was always more than happy to help out a good customer lol. Alot of the stuff I got away with I wouldn't even dream of posting up but you get the idea. Now adays with what your are trying to achieve it prob wouldn't take but a few bucks ( maybe a fin ) each tme and you probably would be the happiest guy in town. A phrase comes to mind here, " you gotta pay to play " and I aint talkin bout no table time. I'm gonna guess your gonna say " well I shouldn't have to do that because I'm already paying table time ". Well I feel ya brother but that's just how things work. And to me this seems like its truly a big deal to you so what's a couple bucks to a guy you already know sin making sheet? I hell why not? He's happy, then you're happy, hell everybody is happy so why not my man?

Why not just move to a different table? Go up to the counter and tell them it just got really crowded by yours and you'd like to move to a table in a quieter area. You get your quiet table and they might realize not to do the same in the future.

I can only echo Bmoremoney's post. Take care of your houseman and they will take care of you.

Taking care of the houseman only works if they know how to run the place. The pool hall i go to they run it like a bar with pool tables. We have to request our regular table every Sunday. They tell people to go wherever they want. They are oblivious to the difference of bangers and players. But they have decent tables and good rates so we go back time and time again.

I'm with you Chop. I know moving isn't that big of deal but that's not the point...the point is how can people be so oblivious?

It just doesn't occur to most people.

Last night I went to dinner with six people. I ordered second. I listened to the waitress give the salad and soup options to the first person and made up my mind. Every single person that ordered after me asked her the exact same questions about soups & salads.

Believe me whatever annoys you about interacting with the public the bartenders and servers deal with 10x as much annoying behavior.

A great Italian Pizza shop is next door to the poolroom. One evening 2 car mechanics came in and the counter attendant gave them one of the best tables. They brought 2 fresh meatball subs with them and proceeded to eat while they played 8 ball. Luckily, they didn't get any on the table, but the carpet looked like they slaughtered a chicken.
Never underestimate the stupidity of counter help.

Yeah but it's probably cause they bring him subs too. Never u underestimate the power of the gapper!

You can read my rants about "bemoaning the barbox" to know my thoughts. I am a douchebag magnet. I barely ever leave the house to play anymore.

All I know is that we have some very good hall owners in the New Orleans area.

The counter/bar tender can not always be taught everything until an issue comes up.

The owners here also usually hire good help. All it usually takes is to mention that the owner would probably not like xyz.

Most help knows that a regular knows the owner better then they do & usually agree without even contacting the owner.

A trip to the counter with a suggestion usually gets results & most would have asked that group to move to another table.

Then as has been mentioned the help has earned a gratuity even if just a small one for doing what is only right.

That said I totally understand the frustration one has put upon us by the inconsiderate selfish blockheads of the world, but sometimes they too just need a kind polite lesson.

Best 2 ALL,
Rick

What I did was buy my own table. The pool hall is noisy and if it isn't noisy with a lot of customers it soon goes out of business.

As of recently I've seen a couple people post about the issue this OP is complaining about. Let me preface this with if the OP is really trying to get some good practice in and he is easily sharked ( or distracted to the point he can't play or whatever the case may be ) I can see how that may be annoying.

With that being said if you are someone that gets distracted to the point where you can no longer play then that you probably need to work on that so that when it's actually game time no one would be able to use that against you because plenty of people would if they knew it works on you. Then again you really need to be able to deal with it anyway because when you're in a tourney or in action the place you are playing in isn't always gonna be empty and you are not gonna be able to have your privacy so this would be a tool you are gonna need sooner or later.

Now about the people themselves; I believe most non players don't even realize they are doing anything wrong. They are just out trying to enjoy themselves and have a good time with their friends without any grumpy old men ( their viewpoint ) ruining their social gathering. Truth is as pool players we DO KNOW the etiquette while it's a good bet 90% or better of non pool players don't have the slightest clue they're doing anything wrong at all.

Solutions : overcome your fear of people so it doesn't shark you when it really counts, lighten up a little and it may not bother you quite as much as it currently does and maybe you AND them can have a good time, take good care of your Houseman and let him know you would like some space while practicing and I'm sure he would oblige, or don't go to the pool hall at all and buy your own table and play in the tranquility of your own home.

I can give you one bit of extremely valuable advice and it's not even pool specific. Try not to stress too much over things that really are not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, stress kills and it really suckered so should be avoided whenever possible. Well, whatever you decide to do ( annoying people aren't going anywhere, pool hall or anywhere else for that matter ) I wish you luck and hope you get it figured out to your satisfaction.

Some people would rather curse the darkness than take a small step into the light.

Sorry, man. I recognized you from your avatar and wanted to be near people I was familiar with.

Oh, and sorry about that nick I put in your cue while you were on the phone. I'd have bet anything I could bang it on the table like that without hurting it. It looked strong.

Won't happen again.

:)
