Cue tip size help * new caliper pics*

So I have an OB-1+ and a 314-2 side by side here. Both are supposed to be 12.75mm but the 314-2 looks and feels smaller. Is it all in my head or what? What is the smallest tip you can put on a 12.75mm shaft? Thanks all.

BTW; the 314-2 has a kamui clear soft and the OB is a moori medium.

Caliper $13 on Amazon and $12 scale that measures in oz, grams, pounds, etc. 2 fun cheap useful tools!

I see that this is your second post. Did you introduce yourself to the other 40 some thousand members of this fine organization in your first post? If you didn't then you should have.
Regardless, welcome aboard.

By the way, when you get that micrometer or calipers in your hands, 12.75 mm is .502 inches.

All the best,
WW

Not sure what you mean, but the smallest tip you can apply is 12.75 mm for a shaft measured the same. With that said, your repairman will use a larger tip and cut it flush to whatever your shaft size is.

Tips

The shafts look to be different DIA to me.

You don't have a ruler or a tape measure ?
a set of drill bits in the steel box, dump the drill bits out and see which hole the tips fit in.:thumbup:
Just remember a can of beer is 56 mm ,
Everyday when I get off work, my left hand get the 56mm craps and the only cure is a can of bud that is a perfect 56mm :thumbup:
O ya there is 613 seeds in every pomegranate, go figure

They look different to me too, I scientifically held them over the diamonds on my table to see the difference. I do need to get a good measurement though. Thanks for the obscure beer and fruit information too. :thumbup: Maybe the ob looks fatter because the tip is a bit shorter. I appreciate all the replies.

The OB1+ may look bigger that the 314 but, it could be kind of an illusion for some
reason, maybe it's the OB1 tip mushrooming enough to make it look big.
I would never turn down a laminated shaft, so I'm just guessing the 314 is 12.75, and the difference is the tip.

They don't always come in at the diameter specified. I ordered an OB Classic+ direct from OB with a custom joint diameter. Joint diameter came in right but shaft diameter is a little large at 12.85mm. Doesn't sound like much, but compared to a true 12.75mm you can tell the difference pretty easily. So wouldn't surprise me at all that either the OB is larger or the Predator is smaller than 12.75.

That's what I was kind of thinking. The moori does have more strokes on it than the kamui does so it may be mushroomed out just enough to trick my eye.

This too... That being said, I like the kamui on the 314-2 better but the OB has a better playing feel to me. I'll get my hands on a caliper and get to the bottom of this.

What are the hours played on each shaft?
After a while abrasives such as chalk will wear down a shaft. How was it cleaned? If the predator was sanded (even lightly with a green pad) size will decrease over time.

Just some thoughts.

Most tips are 13.5-14mm. They are sized down during installation of the tip so the smallest a tip can be on a 12.75mm shaft is....12.75.

HERE IS AN EXCERPT FROM A POST FROM A WHILE BACK.
MAYBE IT WILL HELP.

Let’s look at the actual size of the tips being discussed.

13.00mm = .512 = 512/1000’s of an inch
12.75mm = .502 = 502/1000’s of an inch
12.50mm = .492 = 492/1000’s of an inch
12.30mm = .484 = 484/1000’s of an inch

For comparisons sake:

MM = DECIMAL = FRACTION
12.7mm = .500 = 500/1000’s of an inch

The individual hairs in my beard are .004 diameter

That means:
If you add 2 beard hairs to the diameter of a 12.30 mm tip it will be12.50mm
If you add 2 ½ beard hairs to the diameter of a 12.50 mm tip it will be12.75mm
If you add 2 ½ beard hairs to the diameter of a 12.75 mm tip it will be13.00mm

The total difference between 12.30mm & 13.00mm = 7 beard hair diameters

Beard hairs aren't usually the standard hair I measure by, but I like your info there. Thank you!

You don't need calipers if you're just going to compare.

You can use any of the following:

A strip of paper and a pencil
Your kid's blocks
Two standing crayons

If you want an exact number, get the calipers.

Freddie <~~~ OB looks like 12.87 to me

OK buckwheat do you have 9 pennies ?

9 pennies stacked = 12.94 mm
1 pennys think ness is roughly 1.60 mm

Dimes are 1.30 mm, so ten dimes will work too
