How can someone make a ball on the break and be illegal break?
They really need to switch to 2 balls to the end rail next year.
Three is too much.

The commentators use the term 'non-regulation break', which I think is better.
But the rule sucks anyway.

Well, one reason that stands out is the US Open finals in 2001, Corey v Mika. Corey was soft breaking and somehow making 1, 2, even 3 balls on the break. But no OB's were even passing the middle of the table. It's amazing to watch once, but gets old fast.

I don't like the soft break, but there's gotta be a better way to set up the rules to prevent it. I suggested putting a radar gun on the break and having a minimum break speed.

How about the same rule, but 3 balls need to travel past the 3rd diamond (instead of the 2nd diamond)?

Whatever the rule is, it should never penalize a player who breaks the balls hard.
