New cues with all maple shaft

After realizing I was playing better with a house cue than my LD setup I'm on the market for a new cue with a traditional maple shaft.

Unfortunately the marketing for most of the major makers is pretty confusing, and it appears many of them make only LD or hybrids. I'm also having trouble finding discussions of this for recent new cues.

I'm looking to test out 3-4 cues on seyberts, max budget around 750 (each). Any recs? USA made is a plus.

Thanks

How about a Purpleheart Dufferin house cue convert with a solid maple shaft; it has a low deflection (LD) ferrule setup that might fit your needs; and, not be too hard on your wallet

Get a Schon or go with a custom maker. Can't go wrong with a Schon, great cues. If it were me I'd go with a Runde (nice one available now for $750 on the forum...not mine), or a Nitti Merry Widow. I have a feeling a Nitti might be a good fit as I understand his cues have a pretty stiff taper.

Best hitting production cue with all solid maple shaft in your price range would be Schon. Custom wise, I'm now a huge fan of Gulyassy...best hitting cue I've ever run across.

There are so many great options in the W/FS section, particularly at your budget. Used customs or shafts from highly reputable custom cue makers mated with very good, older butts that don’t command premium prices can provide excellent playing cues.

Just a quick look while writing this post, in the first 2 pages of W/FS, I found a Durbin and a Runde, both of which fit your budget. Classy looking, great players that would be difficult to decide between. It is not too hard to find an Olney within your budget. Those cues have great reputations and my experience with them supports the hype.

My favorite cues are both customs. But I won’t bring them to crowded events like league play where the chance of accidental damage are too high. I purchased 3 shafts on AZB (2 Showman and 1 Schick) that I mated with a 1985 Joss butt. The combination is great. While I prefer the customs, when I am playing in my league, I never think about how much I wish I could go back to them. Those combinations would be substantially below your budget.

An advantage for choosing a custom that has already depreciated is that you are more likely to be able to sell them in the future for prices that are more similar to what you paid. You'll most likely lose quite a bit selling a used production cue in the future, particularly if it has a traditional shaft. From my experience the benefit of just going with used shafts is that they are likely to remain straight or reasonably close for as long as you own them. All three of mine are dead straight and one of them is 18 years old.

I would have a tough time going for a new production cue when these other options are available. Others have made similar comments.

Take your current cue, have a cue maker make a shaft for it with matching rings. Why change the cue? There is no such thing as an LD butt LOL

Gilbert

I have this Gilbert that is practically new.............1200.00

Is having a shaft built to put on your cue butt an option for you? What's your joint pin and collar diameter?

Joss makes some really good maple shafts, just tell them your pin size and you will be GTG.

I have a particularly nice Pechauer with 2 shafts for $800.00

It could be an option - it's whatever the default lucasi size is, with a uniloc joint.

That said I've never even hit with a custom cue before let alone bought one, or worked with a cue maker. I'm not sure I'm educated enough for that yet. The good thing about sticking to stuff on seyberts etc is I can try a few out and send back the ones I don't like (perhaps all of them).
