Let me answer this in parts:
The looming threat of most jobs being automated-Depends on your profession, within the realm of pool, there will always be a need for human management,maintenance and operations.
How the economy can survive It will not survive in it's present form, it will need to change or die, kinda like pool in the states
If no one has money to buy the things robots produce people will learn or they will not,commonly, they will steal and fight to get what they want and/or they need to be more clever and "hustle" to get the things they need and want

The funny part about saying Pool and Poverty out loud, is that saying them together makes me smile.
The term "Starving Artist" comes to mind.
Michelangelo was a "starving artist" Pool players are starving artists as well.
Were it not for the wealthy patronage of the Medici's
(think stake horse-most can't play but love to watch and sponsor) and subsequently, commissions by the papacy (sponsorship)
Even though Michelangelo started out very poor after his family lost their money, he still would have found a way to create (play) even if he just had chalk and a wall.
Nothing else mattered, not money, not his hygiene, just the need to create and the ability to create.
Anyone that looked at him, saw a poor man. He chose to live that way.
So while poor of pocket, he was rich of talent.
