How do you view the term 'Banger'?

Hi all,

Looking for some opinions of how you view the word 'Banger'? I view it a bit ironically, but I don't know that is the general consensus. What I mean is I think it's more likely that someone calling themselves a 'banger' is actually a good player and a 'banger' is much more likely to dislike the term?

I ask for a fairly practical reason - I'm considering a business venture that involves billiards and am considering using this term in some way shape or form within the business name...

Would this turn you off, or would you view is ironically / sarcastically?

EDIT: To narrow down the question a bit, let me ask it this way. The business is not a clothing company, but it makes for a great question - Would you wear a shirt or logo that used the word 'Banger' or do you feel this is an insult to your skill, etc?

Thanks for your opinion -

For me a "banger" is someone who has fun at the game but is not interested in improving or learning about the game. I don't think I've ever seen a definition -- that's just the way the word seems to be used here.

I think of a banger as someone who can make shots well, but does not think very far ahead. So, pretty soon, it is hit&hope. These people are awesome, but they don't learn, don't really improve.

Someone who hits every ball unnecessarily hard with the intention to get lucky in the likely event he misses his intended pocket.

Casual player with no intent other than to have fun. The idiot who puts drinks on the rail (or worse). Your average bar player. Non-league (not that everyone is interested, but AFAIK interest in getting better either involves league or $$$ games).

I think of a "banger," similar to what somebody said above, as a good shotmaker. Yet, they are not great at, nor might they even try, to position the cue ball for their next shot. Additionally, they are known to fire the balls into the pocket, hence being a "banger."

someone who plays slop and just bangs the balls

Yeah a banger aims at the ball, not the pocket. They just "bang" the ball and hope it finds a pocket somewhere. They do not actually aim the object ball at a pocket, they just get down and shoot the cueball into the object ball, normally very hard so it has more chance to find a pocket.

From a clothing standpoint a lot of better players would likely find humor in the irony of wearing a shirt that has "Banger" across the front.

One of the folks yout find in a bar that hits the ball as hard as they can because there's
6 pockets and the ball bounces off the rails.... it's gotta go somewhere......

Like i told max once, when he questioned the shot choice and the velocity of one that just left my tip:
Dammit, max. Some of us just like to watch the balls roll.

Thanks for the responses everyone - would you agree or disagree with the statement above by Celtic - I would find humor in it vs. all of the loud in your face ego-based statements that pool players seem to gravitate towards...

I think to some, the term Banger might mean anything that just plays for fun, and does not take the game seriously at all, and to some others the term (Banger) might mean a player that is of a very low skill level (like any C level player would probably beat them on a regular bases, for example). If I were you, I would only use the word Banger if it were to come across as comedic (something that would sound funny in a sentence). Just make sure that it comes across in a comedic way, and then I think it might be funny to use (if the term is used in a comedic way), but I do not know. I would not want to be referred to as a banger though. A non pool player (someone who does not care about getting better, or is not serious about the game) would probably not care about the term Banger though. I think it would only offend serious pool players. I think it might be funny if used in a comedic way though. Just have to think of some type of funny way to use the word (in a comedic way, that does not come off as sounding offensive).

I like the second part of your answer. To elaborate on this, I believe that most "bangers" do not know what the term "banger" means in relation to pool (but they can quickly draw a conclusion that it's not gonna be good).

To me I would wear a shirt that says "banger" for several reasons:1) All my pool playing buddies would get a giggle out of it. Some of the better players would point at me and say "fact!"

2) It has the slightest possibility to generate a little action, and where I'm from, any tiny straw that will stir the pot I say bring it on!

3) Some of the ladies might not relate the definition to pool, and I might just be tested on my merit to wear the shirt....... **Brown-Chicken_Brown_Cow**!!!!:D

I just love to be called a bar room banger.

Just love banging the balls in the pocket.

My eight ball games usually last about a minute...I just bang the balls in.

I would agree. It's like the big guy nicknamed "Tiny."

Hi Bob, I am curious if you think that a Banger could be a player that plays the game pretty good (like a B level player for example)? I think that a pretty good B level player could fall in to the Banger category (in the way that you see a Banger to be). I always wondered the true meaning of a Banger was too, because I always thought that I might be a Banger. I always loved the game (loved playing it), but I never really liked doing drills. My game never really got to a solid A level (more like a consistent B level, playing 9 ball). Was never really good at other games, like 8 ball, straight pool (14.1), Banks, or 1 pocket. Always just loved playing 9 ball, and was always too lazy to do drills, that could help improve my game, if I worked hard enough and long enough. So, do I sound like a Banger? I think in a way, yes, I am just a Banger.
