What is the greatest single achievement in sports?

Big Reds (Secretariat) 26 length win in the Belmont Stakes...the third race of the Triple Crown. He won all 3. I was there for it, with wife and 4 kids. Amazing horse. Johnnyt

The movie "Secretariat" was so inspiring.

Johnny T - you had 4 kids at the time? Big Red sired something like 600. Catch up brother! ;) What a special part of sport history you witnessed.

I can remember like it was yesterday (it was actually 1974) when my buddy and me ran onto the field and joined Hank Aaron as he rounded 2nd base on his historic, record breaking, 715th home run.  :oink:

I suppose there were bigger single events though.

Hank Aaron is still the all-time home run leader in my book.

I don't know about you, but whenever I see a horse it ain't got no gills.

This one won the Belmont one year....it was a VERY muddy track.

And one person did that 3 times. That would be the greatest ball player ever imho Ty Cobb. Who also has the highest career batting average in major league history. Won the most batting titles as well. Yeah, he was a bit ornery, but he hated to lose !!

Emil Zatopek....gold in 5000m 10000m and marathon* (*nonranked)
In 1952
or

Billy mills 43 second pr in the 10k in 64 to win gold unranked basically.

For short term achievement....

Long term I think the baseball hits, and game streak for hits, Ripken and Brett farves respectable game streaks....

But probably would have to go to Michael phelps for his medal count in Olympics.

Got to go with Emil and phelps short and long term accomplishments

2016 Chicago Cubs

1936 Jesse Owens

Jessie in 36 was a great moment but not much on above and beyond....he was a shoe in for 3/4 in his events.

The USA vs Russia hockey is a much greater achievement. It's def right there with billy mills in 64....

Greatest achievement not wanted is probably Ron Clark never winning a gold lol....owned everyone, 18wr never won gold...snakebit

Cal Ripken's baseball streak (which will never be broken)

Brett Favre's football streak (which will never be broken)

Playing at such a high level, for such a long time, through sickness, pain and personal tragedy, and not missing a single game.

Cal went 14 years straight without so much as missing a single game, flu, injuries, family deaths, etc.
2,632 games straight.

Just two example's of the numerous greatest feats out there.

I like your thinking! Cal went many years without missing a single inning. Cracks me up to hear people talk about how great Jeter was, and how he was the "best ever". Cal beat him in nearly every category, and did so for years.

I think that is at the top of the list, simply because his production actually merited the longevity in the lineup.

Anyone who shoots a 59 in golf is up there for individual achievement on a given day.

Pitching a perfect game is also up there.

Jesse Owens four world records in an hour deserves a mention.

Nadia's streak of "10s" and gold medals, too.

But I have to go with, "Do you believe in miracles? YES!" as tops. They topped it off by beating Finland for the gold. I tear up every time I watch the movie, or hear the call Al Michaels did.

It can be argued that it's not a "single" achievement, but count me in on Phelps' domination in Beijing. 8 gold medals in 8 attempts. I just can't imagine that ever being equaled in a single Olympics ever again.

A couple of those were relays that depended on his teammates not being blocks of lead that sank to the bottom of the pool.
