Cuetec Fires Strickland

> I have an old Accu-Stats tape from the 1991 Bicycle Club event where Mark played Kim Davenport. The Cuetec he was using in that match looked like it had the first 8 inches or so of black coating sanded off,or maybe he just rubbed thru it,but it was definitely a lighter color. His stroke never went past the light colored part of the shaft either. Tommy D.

Oh the Irony, selective Nationalism?

John B, you have made some well written excellent points in this thread, you're initial post was outstanding and it's not wonder so many agreed with it.

I'm trying to stay out of it but its getting difficult! I would like to add that most Snooker (I know I know I always mention that bloody game! Zzzzz :p) players generally use cheap cues that massively deflect. Some of their cues cost as little as $30 and many are very warped including the likes of 7 times world Champion Stephen Hendry.

Correct me if Im wrong but I would have thought Earl has had a better chance than most pool players to still be a wealthy man now hasnt he? He certainly earnt it all himself via his skills but hasn't he made well over $1m through pool?

I listened carefully to the points JAm made in the Marketing thread and I tried to get my head around the possibility that America a) will never like billiards in its current form despite that positive stats from other nations, and b) The America public really doesn't like professional sportsman who aren't as eccentric as Earl. The one thing that kept bugging me was the female game which seems to be pretty popular in the USA, more so than most other countries. Indeed the womens game doesn't have anyone like Earl and most of the finals over the years have been dominated by the ex, some would say "robotic" female players. In order to convince myself that a) and b) may possibly be true can somebody explain away the relative success of the female game on TV in the states?

I also find this news very ironic, I honestly didn't know that these two players use cuetecs, its very interesting indeed that a company would make the choice to chose Allison over Earl, could it be for any other reason than Marketing?

I admire JAMs patriotism as I've stated before but do we just blindly worship a sportsperson no matter what their behavior? Lets for a minute forget Earl as everyone has different opinions on the merits of his antics. In general do people agree that there is a line our heros can't cross in order for them to not be our heros anymore. For example IF wacko jacko had been found guilty of molesting children would you still buy his records and call him the king of pop? Do you still idolise Iron Mike even though he was found guilty of rape?

I'm only posing the question,as again ironically I actually still admire Tyson!

I don't think Cuetec chose Allison over Earl. Allison has her own contract with Cuetec that she negotiates herself each year. She has handled herself like the consumate professional. In fact, if more players who call themselves professionals would emulate Allison's actions then all the cue companies would sell more cues and be able to provide better sponsorships.

There is no question which player has done more for Cuetec. Allison has hands down. She has had more tv time in the last ten years than all of the other men and women combined. Allison works her own business running clinics, running her booth at large events, she sells cues and does the packing and shipping nd customer service herself. She communicates with her fans and answers questions frankly.

So if there was a choice, then it was really no choice at all.

As to why the women's tour does well in the USA. Consistency. The women are one TV constantly. The men erratically. The women have developed a fan base that doesn't entirely consist of pool players. In Rocky Mount, NC I met many fans who don't play pool at all. They just came to watch their favorite players perform.

To answer your question about what the lines are that someone can't cross. It's America baby! In America you can do whatever you want to and you will still be loved by someone. We are so used to corruption, vice, hypocrisy, and politics that it's all just par for the course. Americans are so used to being disappointed and lied to by it's heroes that the bar is really low now for who can be celebrated.

Strickland could utter the most vile racist remark and he will be forgiven five seconds later if he runs a rack. He can show the most unsportsmanlike conduct and be pardoned immediately. Status has it's privileges. Because he is the great Earl he is largely immune from censure.

America loves it sportsmen and women. And America thrives on controversy. So when a famous sportsperson is embroiled in controversy - whowhee that's a hoedown son. The knitting circle doesn't sell papers, Sue Ann stabbing Betty Sue with the knitting needle does.

I heard, he said, she said.....

Yeah, after a while you get tired of people giving you personal experiences that contradict your unsupported opinions. I bet it gets frustrating to want so badly to be taken as such an expert that you could just trash a company's product with no proof whatsoever and not be called on it.

After a while you just have to say, damn the internet and all these people coming out of the woodwork to prove me wrong. Rough isn't it?

Still waiting on your 'quality' definitions. Are you working hard to craft it so Cuetec doesn't fit? Keep going man, I know you can do it. Me and Varney have faith in you.

I just watched this montage on YouTube.

It's kinda ironic how on point and on topic the music accompanying the video is with this thread.

Earl saw back then what I'm just now seeing in American pool, poor fellow.

How would you like to be playing Efren in front of a full crowd of spectators and on TV, and as soon as you dog it, miss a ball, or maybe LOSE -- God forbid -- a TV person comes up and sticks a microphone under your mouth? I mean, really, WTF! Losing is bad enough, and then you have to expound on it.

A very few sports and events have sense enough to give the loser time to regroup. With the ever increasing demands of keeping the public happy usually the mike is in someone's face before they can sit down. Catch someone at the peak of emotion and few have the composure to never say anything that they wish they could retract later.

After a driver who was a friend knocked me off the track and risked destroying my car and dinging me for a two-bit heat race I had some unkind things to say about what would happen in the feature race that night. After the feature race the other driver swore he was going to kill me. Three days later I was over at his place helping him put his car back together just like always.

I don't know why everyone is so upset about this. Maybe it could have been handled better but the are no rules that a company has to stay loyal to it's employer forever. I think both have benefited from this past relationship and you know what, both will be fine. Earl helped put cuetechs name out thier in a big way. Cuetech rode the wave and profited. Cuetech will always have a market for people that want a "decent" hitting cue for a good price. Earl will find a new cue and play on. I don't think the cue in earls case will make much difference. I am a big earl fan but he just goes into some matches with a bad attitude and it gets the best of him. No cue is going to help that.

As for Cuetech cues quality, The are good for what you get. That is a solid hitting cue that you don't really have to take care of. I personally don't like the hit of them but that doesn't mean I couldnt' play with one.
I sell hundreds of them and get no complaints.

I would like to take Jon's bet but the odds are against the the shooter on this one. I do believe that you can tell the difference in the hit of cuetechs cues vs a "good" wood cue but I ain't putting my money on it....lol

Have cuetec cues improved since this time? This thread is 10 years old. I have a r360 and I think it plays fine

Last time I checked was Mike Gulyassy, I think Mike made him a 70" cue or something crazy like that..

Don't know if he still uses that cue.

Mike Gulyassy still sponsors The Pearl. His current cue has grown to 74" and weighs 29 ozs.
